Pastuerizing doesnt have anything to do with field capacity and you dont pasteurize coir anyway.

You misinterpreted what I said. Preparing coir with lukewarm tap water vs boiling water is killing Nefarious bacteria to allow the spawn to take hold of the substrate before bacterial infections have a chance to ruin your substrate and spawn.  Field capacity.. or just under field capacity as shaper’s tech states, is important for reducing side pins in the shoebox.  I meant if you do both properly.. someone should have no issues with failure if done properly

Nah you miss understand. Adding hot water is not pasteurizing. Coir doesn't need pasteurizing.

How deep is the substrate using this tek?

I’m trying to adjust quantities etc for the shoeboxes I have on hand which are different dimensions and size to the sterile ones.

My first tray was about 2 “ in depth.. but it was wider and long than the recommended trays. So I would say somewhere between 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches deep

It's more important to get the ratio of spawn to coir right. Just don't go too thin unless you have the time to mist once it starts to dry out. Some people like Thicc Subs.

Nah, ive had tubs take a week or so to pin before.

Definitely looking good but a little matted and im not seeing any beads of moisture across the surface but may be from being a little to wet instead of a little to dry

Hello everybody.
This is my first attempt going for something else than classic BRF in SGFC.
Ive followed this tek and the bucket tek with my coir.
The coir i used didnt really worked out with the water i put into to it so i decided to put some verm in to get the field capacity right.
Obviously the field capacity wasnt right anyway as you can see in my pictures. I guess u gotta start somewhere and learn by your misstake

The tubs are mixed with 5brf cakes and 1.5coir/verm mix.
And they have been going now for 6days. Its very moist as you can see and i just wonder if i gonna keep it going like this or do any changes to it?

Hard to tell thru the plastic. Crack the lid and take a pic of the surface conditions.
I would probably leave the lid cracked if worried about it being to wet. How big is that tub?

I gave up trying to get a coir recipe. I just make more water than I’ll need, pour in what I think it’ll take and then stir it up and check once it’s cooled. If it’s dry I just add more. I usually get it too wet and then squeeze each handful as I go, that way I know it’s right and I can adjust the water content based on variety and sub depth.

Here is a picture of both tubes.
The one that have the most white surface is only 4cakes and the other have 5cakes.

The tubes is 34x25x16 cm´s and its a 8L tub
I couldn't find the tub that was recommended so i went for the second best i guess.
Well tbh i dont know if i need to be worried about it being to wet since i dont have anything to compare to.
After all its my first attempt, was hoping for some guidness along the way.

So you just add more coir when its all cooled down?
Isnt that a pain in the ass to handle the coir when its cold?
Maybe ill do that next time instead of adding verm.

No I’ll mix coir and verm in a bucket and just eyeball the amount of water, then once it’s all mixed and cooled down I’ll test field cap and if it’s too dry I’ll pour more water in. And I usually make it a little over capacity then squeeze each handful to where I want it as I load it in the tubs.

I tried measuring water and coir at first but it was so inconsistent I just started overhydrating it to save time.

Plus some kinds like PE I’ll make wetter than normal they seem to like it. So it’s just easier for me especially if I’m spawning a bunch.

So this is from my LAGM grow log, cross posted here.
So I'm going to follow this Coir Tek from Shaper Dreaming.

1) Take 550g of coir. For 5 shoeboxes
2) Boil 2.5L of water +1 cup
3) Put 2 cups of boiling water into a cooler for 10 min to pre-heat the cooler
4) Dump out the water
5) Add the coir the cooler, then pour water over it
6) Close lid, wait 60 min
7) After an hour stir up the coir to try make sure you don't get dry spots
8) Wait until cool (I just wait overnight)

And...since the last recipe:
"650g of coir that's 3250. which is 3.25L of water.-Bod",
was way too much water for the Coir I use.
        :doge:
I'll try 25% less water. That's Walmart's name on the package.
It would be interesting if anyone else uses this brand and has to use less water?
