is it possible to make opium from tasmanian poppy in the? If so, where would a person look for a tek? Is it futile to try to grow this breed in the Northeast U.S. starting now (nightime lows in the high 40's (degrees Farenheit), daytime highs in the 70's, getting warmer each day/night for the next 4 months? Quite humid, and the grower has the time and inclination to put in a decent amount of work if necessary. Thanks!

There is one main poppy for Opium production and that is Papaver somniferum, not the Tasmanian variaety of poppy which is a different species.

There is one other minor producer of opium in the Papaver family, One is found in Europe, mostly France and and a few Baltic countries and in a few other places int he world..

Here is the info on the poppy pictures I am now posting below.

The letter to me is from Dr. Mark D. Merlin of the University fo Hawaii. Merlin is the author of, "On the Trail of the Ancient Opium Poppy."

John: the first photo is Papaver rhoeas (It is the common field poppy that is widely spread in grasslands, waste areas and in cultivated fields; it contains alkaloids like all poppies - I believe it has some
morphine and codeine, but you should check with up-to-date sources.

The second photo is a variety of semi-wild Papaver somniferum that grows in
habitats similar to P. rhoeas; it contains morphine, codeine and several other alkaloids. Both photos are from southern France.
