Pan Cyan Question
    #2600558 - 04/25/04 10:13 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

I know there has been so many posts on this but I still can not decide what would be "the right thing"?..

- Many people trying to grow pan cyans have been successful
by sterilizing dung..why were they not effected by not
having the good bacteria? (guess I havent seen many having success
  with pasteurization..)
- the good bacteria fight against the bad ones so the mycelium
can survive, right? but the pan cyan mycelium is said to be
not so strong against contaminants..so but how can I be sure    some "bad bacteria" won't also survive the pasteurization process?

shit..sorry, wrote too much..

what I'm trying top ask is..
- which would be wiser to to with pan cyans? sterilizing and trying
to keep everything super clean? or pasteurizing and letting some bacteria live and hope it will be OK?

I want to start as soon as I have decided..that's why its bothering me.. :mad2:

guess experienced pan cyan growers would have some good answer to this

the dung is store bought btw

oh! but..

it says:
"..As soon you add a additive high in nutrients to the substrate, for instance brown rice flour or wheat bran, the substrate must be sterilized and inoculated in sterile conditions."

i will use a mushmush substrate recipe for pan cyans that involves
using soaked grass seed. are those also "high in nutrients"?

the recipe from mushmush:

Substrates for Panaeolus cyanescens and Panaeolus tropicalis

Although literature suggests that pasteurised straw can be used yields are poor compared to using a substrate that contains dung. People have reported good succes with pasteurised cow and horse dung. We prefer to sterilise the substrate in spawn bags.
A mixture of straw or grass seed and dung seems to work best. Vermiculite can be added to improve structure and water holding capacity.

A high yielding substrate can be prepared with the following recipes:

7 parts dried cow dung
7 parts soaked grass seed Instead of grass seed soaked straw can be used as well
2 parts fine vermiculite
2 parts coarse vermiculite

Ingredients are mixed in dry form (except the soaked grass seed or straw) and water is added until it is saturated. Squeeze out the moisture and sterilised the mixture in spawnbags for 2 hours. These bags can be inoculated from rye spawn.

--------

so they say..

I would go with Una's instructions, as I am unfamiliar with that tek.
