Baathists to get jobs back
    #2600515 - 04/25/04 11:48 AM (13 years, 1 day ago)

Iraq Baathists to get jobs back

Schoolteachers are among those to be reinstated

The US administrator in Iraq says many former public sector workers who lost their jobs after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime may be reinstated.

Paul Bremer said members of the former ruling Baath party who had a clean record could return to their old jobs in the military or education.

Correspondents say the move, which was announced in a televised speech, represents a major shift in US policy.

But it has been criticised by some members of the Iraqi Governing Council.

"This is like allowing Nazis into the German government immediately after World War Two," said Governing Council member Ahmed Chalabi.

Adnan al-Assadi, of the Dawa party, said: "It will help security deteriorate further, disappoint the Iraqis who have trusted the coalition to manage the political process and lead to civil war."

The USA would NEVER stand for Nazis returning to work in German Government...we hired them in ours.At least those we did not smuggle into SA.
The USA is a strange blend of mostly good hearted people being led by the largest whore in the world. Our "leaders" will crawl into bed with a snake for a dollar. If hiring Sadaam's former folks will save a buck, they will look the other way about past deeds and affiliations.
La`merica...just do your job...

Why do I feel that, had the US issued a proclaimation that representatives of this party were forever banned from schools and government positions, you'd see it as our furthering our imperialistic goals and installing puppet leaders that suit only our interests?

I apologize for putting words in your mouth. Could you tell me what your reaction would be if the US said that anyone who happened to be associated with the former/current Ba'athis party would forevermore be banned and expelled from any form of governmental service?

I wonder what constitutes a "clean record".

I would think it an overbroad generalization.Of course such a large population must be represented by any government formed. However often it is such low level beaurocrats who were willing participants in Sadaam's policies of oppression. In the wake of such a mind set I do not believe hiring back the facilitators of Sadaams policies will accurately interpret new policies.I would be more inclined to include qualified Baathists who were NOT previously involved in the former regimes instigation of policy.
An interesting thought I had for former members of Sadaam's regime was a mandatory 5years community service(ie; garbage men, public construction, similar to the coservation corps, to restore basic services to the population, farm labor and so on)

I'd like to note that Alex didn't really post the full text of the article. In absence of him doing so, I shall.

Quote:

'Poorly implemented'

"Many Iraqis have complained to me that the de-Baathification policy has been applied unevenly and unjustly," Mr Bremer said in an address on US-run al-Iraqiya Television.

"I have looked into these complaints and they are legitimate.

Excerpts from Bremer speech

"The de-Baathification was and is sound," he added.

"It is the right policy for Iraq, but it has been poorly implemented."

More than 400,000 civil servants lost their jobs when the armed forces, security services, defence and information ministries were dissolved after the fall of Saddam Hussein.

An appeals system was set up to allow them to reclaim their jobs, but thousands of Iraqis complained it was too slow.

The present US-appointed Iraqi Governing Council had also received widespread criticism for going too far to exclude former Baathists.

Only last week, UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said: "It is difficult to understand that thousands upon thousands... of professionals sorely needed in the country have been dismissed."

'Struggling to cope

The BBC's Dominic Hughes in Baghdad says the reasons for Mr Bremer's announcement are two-fold.

The US-led coalition in Iraq is struggling to fill jobs such as doctors and teachers after the purge last year.

Mr Bremer may also hope that by encouraging the former Baathists to get more involved in government, it may take the wind out of the Sunni insurgency in areas such as Falluja, says our correspondent.

It seems that this is what the Iraqi's want. Any reason for the exclusion of that information Alex? Not pertinent to your side of the story?
