Is it the chemistry or the experience? * 1
    #26003837 -

I've been thinking a lot about dosage and how to get the most benefit from working with mushrooms.

As far as I can tell, there are three main types of dosage.  These are overly general, and don't account for people who are overly sensitive or not very sensitive.

First, the microdosers, let's say less than a gram.  There's a lot of testimonials that taking a dose so small it can't be felt still has profound effects on depression.  Joe Rogan mentions a kickboxer friend who finds it helps him intuit his opponent's next move, but that's kind of irrelevant unless you're a fighter.  Point is, there's a lot of people that swear by it.

Second, the moderate dosers, let's say 1-4.9 grams.  These are the people that do it at parties, take a couple of grams and go to a rock concert or festival, go for nature walks, whatever.  They report having a great time, usually, but they don't seem to talk about how it helps their depression or how transcendental their times were (of course there are exceptions).  My point is, and excuse me if this is arrogant, but these people seem to take mushrooms primarily for entertainment, not therapy or sacrament.

Third, the heroic dosers, >5 grams.  These people tend to stay home, might or might not have a trip sitter, and are prepared to be out their minds temporarily.  These are the people that talk about being reborn, about touching God, about changing their lives, and being cured of depression in one trip.

I wonder a lot whether it's the neurochemistry that has the beneficial effect--meaning, any quieting of the default mode network, any increased connections in the brain, any triggering of brain derived neurotropic factor has a benefit, and the more you consume the larger the benefit would be.  Or whether the experience one has--being reborn and all that--is what causes the depression to fall away and people to change their lives.  Of course, the experience is caused by the chemistry, but let's say that a certain threshold of dosage must be crossed, not unlike sex and orgasm.  (If you've ever had sex without orgasm, you know that it feels good, but something was definitely missing.)

I tend to believe the people who have a lot more experience with this than I do.  So when Terence McKenna talks about heroic doses, about not being able to fight it, about slaying the ego, I believe him.  There's a guy on youtube, Kilindi Iyi, that talks about doses so high (30 grams) that set and setting become irrelevant.  The researchers and Johns Hopkins and Imperial College London both use "high doses" and find that high doses--with a mystical experience--produce the most life changing results.

I don't want to dismiss the microdosers, but there may be an element of placebo to the benefits they're experiencing.  Nothing wrong with that, either.

I don't mean to step on anyone's toes by generalizing or mischaracterizing your experiences.  I observe that there's people that swear by both low doses and high doses, and I'm curious whether or not this heroic dose, ego-murdering threshold must be crossed to get maximum benefit.

I think they are just three different experiences. Microdosing allows one to function during their day to day while still getting a bit of a mind boost.

Maximum benefit is subjective. There is no singular goal everyone is trying to reach with shrooms.

I appreciate it, but when I suffer from depression and addiction to alcohol/cigarettes, and I keep hearing about how a single high dose of mushroom effectively cures people of these things, those are my major goals, and I know I'm not alone.  What percentage of mushroom users are trying to self-medicate is an interesting question.

I'd also hasten to point out that depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and suicide rates are at an all time high, so to the extent that mushrooms are therapeutic--and these are the areas being researched by respectable scientists--those are the goals that will likely lead to medicinal mushrooms and eventually recreational mushrooms, similar to marijuana.  I mean to say, if you want legal mushrooms, focus on how they help with depression.

I understand there is a first amendment case to be made for sacramental use of mushrooms, and it worked in New Mexico, but that seems a tougher hill to climb than FDA approval.

I also wanted to add that Joe Rogan does talk about the benefits of microdosing, but at other times he insists on heroic doses, telling one of his guests "You've never really done mushrooms" unless you have a breakthrough experience.  Whereas his buddy Ari Shaffir, founder of shroomfest, suggests splitting an eighth with a buddy and having a good time.

Let me ask a more focused question then: If I'm trying to resolve my depression, would I be better off taking microdoses or heroic doses?

Having done both, I'd say if you're trying to beat depression or addiction, you need a life changing dose > 5 dried grams.

Having that breakthrough is everything. It permanently changes your perspective in/on life.

Also, not all grams are equal, so be sure you are getting good quality.  I learned on my last grow that certain parameters affect the potency a LOT.  I ended up with a bunch that was about 50% the potency of the last ones I grew.  Once I discovered what I was doing wrong and fixed it, the potency went back up.

Well that's easy - it takes a serious dose to accomplish it.  Not a "heroic" dose - this is a stupid name - but enough to do a complete brain reset.  What that amount is you'll have to discover by experiment, which is the best way to find out anyway.  I've tripped a huge number of times AND I have bipolar II and it works for me every time - resets to the good part of the cycle.

So my advice is just do what you think is significant dose, see how it goes, wait a week or two, increase it a bit (twice the dose = 4 times the effect usually so use some caution), see how that goes and what it does, and so on.  You'll get the answer you want eventually.

For me a serious dose is one that brings on OEVs during the comeup.  Anything less and I'm not really satisfied.  But I'm willing to try microdosing when my new crop comes in because I've never tried it in an appropriate fashion before, and hey, maybe it really is good for something.

I dunno, man.  I've been tinkering with dosage and tolerance for a while, and I've had my ass whupped by 5 grams, I've had manageable transcendence on 7 grams, and recently I had a complete dud 5 gram trip.  (The dud was my first time making tea, and my pupils barely dilated at all, so perhaps I screwed it up.)

I'll definitely keep tinkering.  I will try to do 11 grams next time with a trip sitter, as I've experienced large doses where I wasn't in control before, and to me (living in an apartment) that seems risky.

When you say OEVs during come up, do you mean the usual swirly ceilings and carpet, and moving wood grain, or something more fractal?

Micro dosing benefit shows up at your baseline mode.  Think of it like eating healthy, one healthy meal won’t do much but a long term good diet makes all the difference in the world.

The other extreme, say 8+ grams, you probably won’t do those often.  They’re the most profound but, it’s a lot to get through.  Those will change your life like a NDE will... the experience and then the memory are going to be what sticks with you.  A good number of your beliefs may change.

The middle road 3.5-5 grams is where you’ll probably hang out the most.... these are good reminder doses to recall you 10+ gram trips.  It’s strong enough to get into the mind space but won’t tear your mind apart.

The highest I’ve gone was 14 grams and all I remember is sitting there and my head hurt because it was too strong.  I would have got much more benefit from two 7 gram trips or three 5 gram trips..

I agree that series of increasingly strong trips with a nice reset period afterwards can be excellent therapy.

In my experiance, i tend to get more out of large doses. My most life changing trip came from a 10 strip of acid. I plan on taking a 5-6g mushroom dose this coming weekend in a very remote desert wilderness.

That was for DMT but it works for mushrooms too - it's how to spot what generally develops into a fully realized trip IME.

If my shower turns into a transdimensional portal on the comeup I just know it's gonna be fun. :cookiemonster:

If you're gonna do this you'll want to standardize your dosages.  Ideally grow them yourself and consume them fresh (or better as tea).  At the least powder dry fruits and mix thoroughly.  Otherwise variations in potency can screw up your attempts to find the best dosage...

I think there is probably more than one threshold you can cross on a mushroom trip. A beneficial experience which feels mystical and profound can involve crossing a threshold where you seriously begin to question your assumptions about reality, but it does not require a full-on 'ego-murdering' dose.

I think sometimes people downplay the sheer insanity of the kind of dose where you know you are headed for oblivion. I find that these doses pass through paranoid delusions on the way up to the peak (the wrath of God, alien enslavement, a complete breakdown of your belief in everyday reality) and then the gradual comedown from whatever transcendence you experience at the peak can take you through extremely manic states of grandiose delusions (I am God, I am dead, I control the universe from behind the scenes, my trip is of vital importance to save humanity).

:busytripping:

The kind of transcendent experience you can get at the peak of these trips is something quite incredible, but it sometimes feels like a kind of sacrifice where you burn in the fires of the trip and have to die before you can come back, having fallen through the floor of whatever assumptions previously grounded your reality. You experience an illusory death and reach a viewpoint from which your life seems to be an illusion aswell.

I mean this is the kind of thing you can be up against:

Quote:
It is dose dependent. It does not vary amongst strains or names. It is one thing. You do not have to name it because it is within you.

I have been here before. It feels a lot like dying. It feels like the skin is being blasted from your bones. Except you are hallucinating the bones. There is nothing. Plains of despair and windswept misery. When you have abolished yourself. When you wake up within your misery and question your plans. When you fall asleep within yourself and have to do this to wake up. Then it becomes frightening

:uhoh:

I'm not sure what lesson you can draw from a trip where you 'die and become God' other than to marvel at the power of the drugs you are taking. I guess what I mean is that the core experience of some kind of mystical, universal consciousness underlying reality (which seems to be a regular feature of psychedelic trips in one form or another) can be slightly undermined if the trip surrounding it is so insane that you cannot take it seriously.

Either you shift into a Philip K Dick kind of distrust about the nature of reality, you dismiss large parts of the experience as delusional or nonsensical, or you start to wonder whether the Gods and aliens are in fact really down there....

I guess the only way to make sense of it all is from a more buddhist perspective; that you are having the illusory nature of reality powerfully demonstrated to you. From a scientific viewpoint regarding the nature of reality / consciousness, it is an equally crushing demonstration of the fallibility of naive realism.

And from a mystical standpoint... well I guess these trips leave their mark, a subtle sense of the beyond that lingers long after the drugs have worn off. You may not believe, but you know...

I approached this on an 6ish week cycle with increasing doses:  1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 5 with the 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 5 hitting the equinoxes and the solstices.  The cycle put in me touch with the universe, the connections and love that we all share.  It also taught me about the fun side of mushrooms and about the sacred geometry and that I'm not ready for a heroic dose.

You can take it as a salient illustration of the fairly basic fact that you already are God.  You already are reality.  You already possess the abilities to make use of this information but you don't actually know how to use them yet.

Or of course you can blame it on the drug (an ego defense) and lose the opportunity to do something with it that few people have ever done...

It's not a test, there's no grade, but there is liberation in these trips because they so actively put your limited consciousness in its place while offering up unlimited alternatives (that the limited consciousness has no hope of ever grasping).  Which is why it has to die in the trip in order for the god-head to take its place - and THEN you see.

Again, even after that you can just blame it on the drug, of that you weren't "ready" for this kind of insight, or that these revealed sorts of immanent reality can't possible be "real" (whatever that actually is).  Anything to avoid seeing how ego binds your perception and limits your action.

This is how it seems to go for most people. Fortunately, at least with mushrooms, you can grow as many as you need to get past the end...and to the beginning.

Like Lennon wrote,

"Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream
It is not dying, it is not dying

Lay down all thoughts, surrender to the void
It is shining, it is shining
...
So play the game "Existence" to the end,
Of the beginning, of the beginning"

Well from this post. I would be classified as the "entertainment" spectrum. Which is the case at times. But I take them for my walks in a forest and hiking trips. I've done doses alone and everything.. and great.. but I LOVE being out in nature and being aware of my surroundings.

I don't think it really matters. It's not a dick sizing competition. I will eat 2g/3g of some homegrown cube chocolates and spend my whole day in the woods walking trails and snacking on peanuts and good fruit.

Its EXTREMELY relaxing and enjoyable more than I can put into words. I go home with a smile on my face, and just think to myself what a good day it was and sometimes have trouble sleeping because I'm so full of bliss and enjoyment.

To each their own. There is no "right" way to do anything. 2+2=4, so does 3+1. Different paths can sometimes lead to the same outcomes.

I have found these to be extremely eye opening. Nothing like setting up your hammock after a nice walk, and laying down in it and watching nature. And I actually fucking love it, because its actually what's really happening in from of my eyes.

I'm not "hallucinating", I'm watching life unfold in front of my eyes with an altered consciousness that allows me to perceive it in a completely different manner.

I'm glad you have good experiences.  What I was trying to gently point out is that the microdosers and the large dosers both talk about relief from depression, but I never hear that from the 1.1-4.9 gram people.

As for the "right" way issue... well, if there's wrong ways to take psychedelics (while driving, before a flight, after an argument with your girlfriend), there must be right ways as well.  I would point out that the people doing the research at Johns Hopkins and Imperial College London both have their subjects lay down on a comfy couch in a comfy room with eye shades, headphones with a soothing playlist, and one or two therapist trip sitters that sit by and offer support if needed.  They also report little, if any, bad trips or other incidents like HPPD, perhaps due to careful screening of participants, but perhaps because their method is one way to do it "right."

I don't mean to judge what works for anybody else, but to me, it's undeniable that some methods of using mushrooms are more likely to be beneficial than others.  That doesn't mean it has to be dogmatic, either "You must take five dried grams on an empty stomach in silent darkness alone."

Shroomery, to me, is all about sharing data, and hopefully our collective wisdom could eventually hammer out some refined methods for using mushrooms that increase the likelihood of benefit and reduce the risk of problems.  Because from where I sit, the benefits are more elusive than expected, the the problems are more prevalent than expected.

I don't think HPPD has ever been particularly associated with shrooms, it seems to be more of an issue with LSD and RCs (especially where the use is frequent and heavy).

Mentioning 'bad trips' is interesting. At higher doses you are much more likely to experience the intensity as being unsettling, and enter into an anxious, negative headspace.

I think there can be a lot of benefit from a trip where you are able to work through this negative headspace and come out the other side with feelings of acceptance, transcendence, euphoria e.t.c

More problematic is the kind of trip where somebody encounters this unsettling, anxious headspace but is unable to get past it, and the trip becomes a negative experience that causes lingering anxiety afterwards.

I think higher doses always involve an element of challenge and sometimes fear - there is a limit how far you can take a psychedelic experience if you are insistent that all aspects of the trip should be uniformly positive and unthreatening. If higher doses were used for serious therapy there would have to be a recognition that you are delving deep and will be facing your own anxieties and fears e.t.c

Quote:

It may be that they are mainly focused on recreational use at this kind of dosage. An afterglow from shrooms is quite commonly reported at moderate doses, I don't think the dose needs to be huge to get a lingering feeling of wellbeing.

Quote:

It depends what benefit you envisage before you take them - for example, if someone is not depressed, they won't be too bothered about the potential anti-depressant effects.

I suspect the more transcendent or spiritual experience of mushrooms is often discovered accidentally, when the main aim was to get good visuals or just to explore further into the headspace. This is definitely the case with me, I was just interested in exploring the psychedelic headspace without any definite aim.

I think how 'deep' you need to go to benefit from the more transcendent aspects of the trip also depends on your motives for tripping in the first place.

I think a lot of people miss a sense of anything existing beyond the usual everyday world, especially if they are not religious, and mushrooms provide that gateway into mysterious realms where anything seems possible. I think some of the benefit of shrooms is purely from this magical quality, a renewed sense of childlike wonder. You might not really get this from low doses but I don't think they need to be especially high before you reach this state of wonder.

How far you want to venture into that is a personal thing, not everyone wants to have their reality shattered and put back together again by a trip.

I guess you would have to tailor the dose e.t.c to the individual in order to gain the maximum benefit from any particular trip, depending on what the person wants from the experience and how far they are willing to go into it.
