Growing in lowland wet land in eastern Nebraska near a natural pond. Found under wood brush and in a group. White gills. White stem. Seems to have scales on top. Any ideas?

May I ask how you can tell they are heliocybe? I'm new to this (shrooming) and will take all the education I can get.. I also looked them up online and these seem to be rather rare? Is that true? Thanks so much!

I love how you use "shrooming" as a word for mushroom hunting. We should all adopt it... Ovoids in wet areas are what you're looking fo.

Not in Nebraska. Ovoids don’t get anywhere near Nebraska.

I used an identification key to identify it, and then checked my finding against descriptions and photos. The defining feature is the way the scales on the cap are arranged so that it looks like a sun, and it is from this that the mushroom gets it’s name - Heliocybe derives from the Greek helios (= the sun) and cybe (=head), and means "the sun-head", and sulcata derives from ‘sulcate’ which means ‘marked with parallel grooves’ referring to edge of the cap often appears strongly and deeply sulcate.

Where did you read that? I don’t think that’s true.

Every mushroom is rare somewhere, but these are definitely not rare in Texas.
Here is a distribution map: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=any&taxon_id=179154
I checked MushroomObserver.org, iNaturalist and Mycoportal, and you are the first person to ever find this species in Nebraska.
You could document your discovery by creating observations for it on MushroomObserver.org and/or iNaturalist.org.

That's cool, I totally misidentified this one, I thought it was a lentinus or something similar.

Mushrooms Demystified - it's an old book and the names for a lot of species have changed since it was published, so you have to look up the current names, but it's still very useful. Your mushrooms, for example, used to be called Lentinus sulcatus. There is also an online resource at mushroomexpert.com which has keys to most of the American genera, and I use this a lot too.

It's such an interesting mushroom this Heliocybe sulcata. The fruiting bodies of Heliocybe can revive after desiccation, and it evolved independently of other agaricoid mushrooms, i.e. morphologies with distinct cap and stipe in the Agaricomycetes. I really enjoyed reading about it.
