Started up a new batch of Caerulescens a couple days ago.:-)

This batch is with spawn from the wild prints I took last Oct./Nov.  Changed my spawn to sub ratio from 1:1 to 1:2 and am using a 12 qt boot box.

Spawned 4/28:

Anyone else having any luck?

Here's my best effort so far. I was away for a week and the temps dropped so all my jars and plates were on a go slow. I think everything is picking up again now though

Edit: I reduced the file size of the pic too much:shrug:

Looks like healthy myc.  This strain in general colonizes and fruits very slow.

What are you planning to use for sub?

The mycelium grew just fine for me, but yeah getting it to fruit is ~3 month colonization/fruiting period. My best results were with just coir.  Any fruit pics brain?

I had a ton of aborts but two reached maturity about a month after spawning.  After the second fruit trich took over.

Fruit 1:

Fruit 2:

New batch is colonizing a lot faster than the last.  Going to change up my casing as well.

Not bad. You said you got a print too? I thought everything I was growing was sterile but I let some go past prime and those put out some light prints.  Haven't gotten around to trying those spores yet. I'm glad to see someone else trying and sharing.

Yeah I meant to post this pic as well.  F2 spores still haven’t germinated but this is the print from F1.

alright yall, advice needed

we got that spawn bag, fully colonized, opened 4.9.19. cut the bag so the top half is exposed, both top and top half of sides, but bottom & lower sides are still in plastic. all sides cased with with peat moss mixed with river clay.
its been like 5 weeks. top gets misted bout every-other day. maybe a week or two ago, the block was submerged in a pot of cold water for a few hours, trying to super-hydrate + cold shock. the block sits open air in the grow room, under some banana plants. temps range from ~68F at night to ~86F during the day, hard to keep steady this time of year, but mostly sticks round 78F. humidity also fluctuates, but my guess is its usually between 70-80%. theres a fan in the room, not directed at the block, but providing steady airflow.

i do see new growth coming through the casing layer where the plastic still covers.

i know these guys are supposed to take a while to pin, like 6-9 weeks seems standard. its bout to be show time! any advice on how to get this block to start popping???
do i need to work on keeping things consistent? are these temps okay? does it need to be wayyy humid? should limit the FAE for a week or something, then re-expose to air??

its supposed to be drizzly-rainy for the next week or so outside, but its warm spring rains finally, even a lil muggy out... i am wondering if i should maybe set the block outside somewhere?? we have successfully fruited atl7 outdoors in May a few years back, and iirc have seen posts of folks collecting these with caerus at same time/same site...

trying to be patient here, but also getting anxious like maybe we should do something to create better fruiting conditions.... help!!

:sun:

Good work so far spitzenkorper. Cool to see you are playing with Caerus.

The river clay is an interesting choice.  These guys don't really need it, I would leave it next time.  The clay will just thicken our casing making it tougher for pins to form.

If your block is thick and you added wood, then pins will take longer.  I've found that Caerulescens doesn't require much wood or even any at all. I've done both fresh and composted wood at less than 10%, 5%, and none, and found them to still produce normal fruitbodies.

In regards to your fruiting environment, those temperatures are fine. I would increase the humidity though as much as possible (close to 100%) to help induce pins.  We want the environment saturated up until pins form, then add the fresh air as needed to form the fruitbodies.  I wouldn't even use the fan even if it isn't directed at our block.  Just by you entering once a day to check brings in plenty of fresh air already.

Unfortunately if we are using a wood dominant substrate, we will have to really be patient and wait.

Best thing you can do for now is maximize the humidity and keep the temps as warm as possible so our pins will quickly arrive.

Okay goodluck!  :bliss:

If you have spare spawn, I say start a new tray with a new sub of mostly hummus (composted horse manure), straw pellets and verm.  Keep it thin an inch or two thick and see them definitely fruit in 3 weeks at room temperature.

awesome, thanks for the advice sarah!

the river clay was chosen because  its said that the georgia populations are usually found in red clay, and then theres a video on youtube of mass fruiting from a sheer wall of jungle landslide, looks like sandy clay.

(if you are reading this thread and have not seen the video that im referring to, video search "caerulescens derrumbe", 2min9sec, and prepare to have your mind blown!!)

the clay casing layer is thin, ~0.5"
the whole block is about 4x4x12". it is HEAVY, from soaking, like as heavy as a gallon of milk, maybe more, 8-10lbs. but solid, dense, if it were to drop to the ground, it would just thud, not break.

there is definitely some wood in this mix. ~30% wood, ~10% each of doug-fir shavings, twigs, and crushed gum balls (both from sweet gum trees). i suspect the bigger twigs might take some time to digest, myc moves right through the gum balls.

the fan is on because the space is primarily a grow room for plants, which grow much more sturdy with just a lite steady airflow.

for now, we might just put the block into a tote with a lid on, open it once each day. that will increase humidity, and can keep the fan on plants. when the pins start popping, open the tote & leave it open.

there is PLENTY of culture left. we will try some manure & straw-based mixes in the future, but bout to relocate in just a few weeks, so cant start any more projects until after. will then have much more time and resources to put toward myco projects tho...

i will not be surprised if this block starts pinning mid-move, thats the way life goes round here lol

I tried a mix of HWFP’s, wood chips, coir and pine needles a while back and didn’t have any luck.

The first time I tried @CaptainFuture’s sub recipe I was able to get a couple fruits.  I’m using 30% straw, 30% straw pellets, 30% pine shavings and 10% hpoo for sub.  2:1 sub ~ spawn ratio this go around.

Casing I’m using is just a basic potting mix with some CaCO3 added to bring the pH up to between 6 - 7 @ 1” - 1.5” thick.  I’m going to add earth worm castings to the casing on the batch that’s almost ready.  When I find them growing wild in my yard there are always earthworm mounds around and I tested the pH of the soil which is why I started adding CaCO3.

This pic is several days old and the sub is now fully colonized.  Going to case tonight!

I set my temps at 80F during the day and dropped down to 75F at night.  Humidity was set at 85%.  Think I’ll try what @saralove recommended and set it at 100% until they start to pin.

Actually have a great phenotype from one of my experiments that’s colonizing oats almost as fast as cube myc.  Again, these pics are a few days old but the jar on the left is one of my Roatan clones, right is Caerulescens.  Caeru was spawned on 5/06 and cube on 5/08.

Pics of GS from yesterday, I believe, of the Caeru jar.  Made up some more sub last night so I’ll be spawning tonight. :-)

Wood prolongs everything for this species.  I so happy when I found out on my own that they don't even need it all. :sun:

Worm castings will make our casing nutritious.  It can confuse the mycelium and we might have a tougher time with pinhead formation. But, I always say first hand knowledge is better than second hand, so definitely play and see for yourself.

Those temperatures are perfect but definitely maximize the humidity as much as you can.

Nice! Cool block but looks dry. Definitely will be happier in a much more humid environment if you can provide it.

put the block outside for a bit yesterday to get some natural rain water.
then put the block in tote, misted inside. also have a chakruna plant in there, think the plant needs higher humidity as well.

checked the tote this morning, all is still wet, so thats good i guess, humidity increase achieved. pins look the same.

bumped the heat up a lil in the room too.

yes, the top of the block is dry, but gets misted bout every other day, then let it dry for a day, then repeat. trying to stimulate pins by evaporation. the parts still covered by plastic stay moist
i thought the river clay would hep retain moisture, but it actually seems to dry pretty quickly, then its compact & crusty.

anyway, i think these are about pop off, just give it like one more week

Nice looking pins @splitzenkorper!  Hope you have better luck than I did getting them to fully mature.  I think mine started aborting due to inconsistency in conditions.

Rounds 2 - 4 currently in various stages:

#2 - Almost ready to case.  Thought it would be ready last night but not quite.

#3 - Spawned yesterday and recovering nicely.

#4 - First jar of indoor Caeru GS colonizing!  Started with spores from first indoor fruit on agar.
