10 simple tips when dealing with traffic stops. 1

A retired cop’s dumbed down strategies for dealing with the police and traffic stops. I don’t presume to know everything and I am not a lawyer, so if you have something add please comment and get the information out there.
1 Make sure your tags and inspection is up to date
2 Make sure all of you equipment is in working order, headlights, brake lights, running lights, and especially your license tag light. Cops look for cheesy ways get you pulled over. They teach these techniques in their training schools.
3 DO NOT SPEED, on the other hand do not drive to slow either. When I say too slow I mean 20mph in a 35 mph.
4 Travel the main roads, especially 4 lanes. Why do I say that. Where I live police, sheriffs and state troopers like to do a license checkpoint. Normally these aren’t done on busy 4 lane road and busy 2 lane roads. Another point about sticking to busy road is there are safety in numbers.
5 DO NOT SMOKE CANNABIS IN YOUR CAR. No matter how much febreeze or perfume you use, it won’t cover up the odor. Also no matter how careful you are, you will always drop sticks stems and seeds in between the seats.
6 Avoid the “Felony Forest.” The felony forest is a term for a large number tree air fresheners on the emergency brake pedal. In cop terms this is what they call an indicator.
7 If you are stopped, be polite, but know your rights. One strategy officers use is “the mister nice guy routine”. They stop you for a frivolous violation of the law. They act nice and reassure you the only thing he is going to do is issue you a warning ticket. After giving you a warning ticket and handing back your drivers license, they will ask for consent to search your vehicle. Don’t fall for it. Politely tell the officer that you don’t have time and if I am free to go I would like to be on my way. If the officer seems to be aggressive about it, asked the officer if you are being detained or under arrest. Legally they can detain you long enough to issue a ticket or a warning ticket, unless you are under arrest. If neither applies to you, you are free to go. Most cops have a problem with power and authority, use that in your favor. Try to record the officer without him knowing. Cussing out a cop on the side of the road will only make them look harder at you. Another thing is if you are arrested and your case goes to trial, there may be video and audio used against you. Judges frown on cussing officers out. One more thing on this topic, if you are arrested and you have a lawyer working on your case, it will be easier to get the cop to go a long with a plea bargain if you haven’t made it personal.
8 Keep things you don’t want discovered locked in your trunk. Unless a K9 has alerted on your vehicle, they will need a warrant to go into your trunk. Again, don’t give consent to search your car! Keep in mind if your vehicle reeks of fresh Cannabis, they will leave an officer with your vehicle obtain a search warrant and finish screwing you over.
9 Police K9s are hard to defeat. Departments spend thousands of dollars on the dogs themselves not including the thousands they spend on training and equipment. Theses dogs make the department a lot of money in seizures. If you are a daily Cannabis smoker, the odor is all over you. There is a good possibility that the dog will alert on your vehicle. Keep that in mind, if arrested, politely invoke your Miranda Rights and consult with a lawyer about your case. Don’t think you going to have a trial on the side of the road or convince the officer he or she is wrong.
10. DO NOT DRIVE IMPAIRED
In closing. We all want to believe the police are our friends. THEY ARE NOT. The only way for cops to get raise in salary is promotions. This means that they have to constantly kiss their supervisors ass and make arrests. The cops to worry about are the young ones straight out of the academy. Everybody in the academy wants to find that magic kilo that gets them off of patrol and makes them a detective. Don’t let them make detective on your back!

What do you do if you get to the point where you have to say you want your lawyer present but you can’t get a real lawyer and have to use the public pretender? How nice are they after you flex for an attorney, and then use theirs? They’re all buddies after all.

At the end of the day it’s all a sham. The court system is a money game. You hire a lawyer, you get slapped on the wristyou can’t afford one and get a public defender, you get bent over....

If they start asking questions that make you uncomfortable, you should say "I have nothing further to say until I speak with an attorney."
Sometimes the cops get annoyed, other times they are happy because they can get on with doing their job and can stop questioning you. You don't actually need a lawyer until they file charges a few months later.
Sometimes they arrest you for BS charges and when the DA sees the police report they are like...this is stupid and decline to file charges. Sometimes you can sue them at that point.

How are you able to sue the police for arresting you? Even on trumped up charges. Years ago my sister was pulled over for running a stop sign. She eventually started yelling at the officer when he was dicking her around. She was basically like write me a ticket so I can leave. They arrested her for a traffic violation. For doing a rolling stop at a stop sign. She had no prior charges but the cop must of said something to the magistrate because the put her bail at $1000. So I can agree with the tip about always being polite because they can go out of their wa

Also if you get pulled over make sure your hands are visible on your steering wheel when they walk up to your vehicle. If it's after dark, turn on your dome lights so they can immediately see you are not about to harm them with a weapon.

Thanks for the tips. I am keen to keep a low profile and not attract police attention.

Good stuff. The Barry Cooper videos are good to watch. I wonder what he is up to these days. But yeah don't drive at night if you don't have to, make sure your tags are up to date, car is in working order, no drug related bumper stickers, etc. Just look like the average Joe obeying the law...
