psig? None....what do you mean? Are you talking about the Magnehelic gauge on the unit? You should be reading 1" or higher and under 2". You should replace the filter when it gets closer to 2"

Also...bangin' nice hood. Never worked on a Nuaire personally but they are top notch next to a Baker EdgeGard from what I hear.

here is a picture of the gauge in operation i'm not sure if it's enough air flow.

you could calculate air flow from the resistance if you had a chart for the filter and assume it hasn't been loaded with any debris. otherwise the resistance shown on the gauge is useless for trying to figure out flow you just need to measure it. some filters have very low resistance some have high resistance

Re: flow hood question [Re: bodhisatta]

That means your pressure is only 0.1" of resistance behind the filter, you have a hole in the filter or a gasket leak. You should be reading 1.0" on the MiniHelic or higher. Possibly try tightening the filter mounts or look for any holes in the filter face. I assume this is a new to you hood?

The nuaire hoods are designed to operate with a 1.0" filter, it should be reading 1.0" or higher.

With the photo of the gauge expanded all the way, you'll see two letters: W G. for meaning (Water Gauge).
Water gauge is a transparent tube that has a u shape to It. Also it has water in the tube. one end of the tube is mounted to the Plenum of the flow hood and the other end goes out to the outside atmosphere.
When the blower is running it should raise the water column one inch.

those gauges don't use an actual water tube just like you don't weigh yourself with a balance anymore.

These minihelic gauges do not have water in them but they operate on that same principle. Inches Water Collumn, resistance, all the same when measured in inches water column. Just no tube of water in these gauges, they just have regular air lines that connect.

It should be reading 1.0" or higher. The filter is done (clogged maximum) at 2.0" on the gauge. The blower on these pro hoods have a built in speed control to keep the cfm coming out of the filter the same while the pressure will rise as it clogs over time. That's why Magnehelic and minihelic gauges are very useful. Also in a situation like this where you can clearly see that the filter is either damaged badly with holes or the gasket is leaking or the blower possibly isn't working properly. If it is blowing hard and this is your reading on the gauge you have a major leak and the hood is not functioning. I am sure a lighter in front will barely bend.

ive used this hood for a while and it works well but recently it really hasnt well i held a lighter to it it looks like the flow is uneven. So you guys are saying the hepa most likely has a hole in it? the gasket seems to be on just fine.

Also how do i go about looking for a hole to confirm this theory?

Either has a hole or it is not pressed up against the gasket evenly. Did you move it recently? If the hole isn't visually obvious there wont be anything you can do. Open the back panel and tighten down the mounts again.I think these have a "knife edge" that presses into the filter gasket, make sure it's all in good shape and everything.

Maybe a moth or mouse nibbled a little hole too...Housecat? They scrath stuff. just visually check it out as best you can and re-tighten the mounting bolts is all you can do. If that won't do it you are in for a filter.

Also....make sure the 2 hoses that connect to back of the minihelic are properly attached. LOL.

Do you recall what the minihelic gauge used to read when you first started successfully using the hood?

That's strange. Maybe one of the 2 hoses is disconnected from the gauge or something.

I'm not 100% sure on this model, but I think there should be another hose going to that second hose barb. Do you see one in there? Is the minihelic in the same chamber as the filter or is in in another area? One barb should be exposed to the plenum and the other barb should be exposed to outside the flowhood. If it is inside the part where the filter is mounted, like you can see the back of the filter where the minihelic is, then it doesn't need to have the second hose since it's already in the plenum.

the minihelic is the gauge, sorry friend

is the back of it in the same chamber as the filter (the plenum) or is it in a separate chamber?

just so you guys know the mini helic is supposed to read 0.5 on this gauge as per the online manual. I figured out there was an air speed adjustment and bumped it up to that level.

Nice good to know. So it would be 0.5" for a new filter and 1.0" for a maximum used up filter (while the unit is making 100fpm) Make sure to buy a 0.5" w.g replacement hepa for it then. A lot are 1.0".

Hey Bacon..,
Just for giggles you can build a water gauge with silicone a plastic clear flex  tube and water. Oh a ruler to measure the rise and fall of the water column in the tube when running the filter. One end of the tube in the plenum and the other end to the outside atmosphere. Don't forget to shape the tube into a U....
