Drying Q
    #25993903 - 05/15/19 07:17 AM (4 years, 10 months ago)

I had some weird fat (not big) mutants from small tub in dehydrator for 24h at 160F ... after removing them from dehydrator i could squeeze some of them a bit, but they do not bend.. so i m confused are they fully dry, they were like hollow sponge.. anyone with same experience?

I guess this could happen also easily with var. like PE, APE, KSSS, blobs etc..

Thanks!

ye i guess.. maybe my gf set it to 95F accidentally when she was moving dehydrator.. but again that could happen after 12+ H at 160F.. so it should be still ok..

IME dense spongy fruit like ape and PEU don't get what you'd call cracker dry and snap but is still use discretion I'd your case.

It means to judge them for yourself. If in doubt, throw them back in the dehydrator.

dry em longer.

meaty fruits can sometimes take 30hrs:shrug: you could also cut them lengthwise before drying

Yeah. If you have meat stick mushrooms.. create less surface area for the drying process (take cap off, slice stem down middle).

You want them cracker dry. If you squeeze, the mushroom should pretty mush turn to powder & crumble. Easily.

that spongy fat fruit weights around 0.7-0.8g dry and other 2.2g bigger, but more normal looking fruit was not spongy and was cracker dry like normal mushroom.. so with that logic, smaller fruit should be also cracker dry.. problem is i drop them inside jar with another 50g.. i will try found those few and dry them a bit more or eat asap.. lol

also i found this guy saying similar thing for pf albinos:

i should add, these mushrooms feel like there is a bubble of air inside of the stem. the very bottom of the mushroom is hard, and the rest is like a sponge. squishy, like its gonna pop if you squeeze too hard.

Pretty typical of PF Albino. Just wait until you dry them, they will weigh almost nothing relative to other varieties of Cubensis.

the first time i grew them, after i dried them, they were still spongy. but dry! its weird. these came out cracker dry, but the first time they came out dry but spongy full of fuzz inside. theyre weird ones...

When in doubt, weigh the test material periodically to observe change in weight.

I think i will do that, but looking at the stem core stracture i think there  is no way it will be rock hard even with extra 24h hour..

I've been drying mine for 30 hours at 160F. I was drying at 110f for 30 hours and it wasn't getting the job done. They would seem cracker dry but after a week in a bag they would be bendy.

Its always better to over dry for a day then under dry for an hour :super: I would also suggest putting silica gel packets or desiccant in with ur dried mushies just as a precaution.

Another good way to tell is if u can twist or move the cap at all without it snapping there not dry. I use this methode all the time. It really helps.

My apes don't get snap dry in the middle. They look like urs does. But u can still tell they are very dry. Definitely put a silica gel or desiccant packet in with ur dried mushies. This way if there is a tiny bit of moisture u won't loose ur mushies a week later. I once lost a HUGE ape (biggest mushie I ever grew) to this. I dried it for 48hrs and it looked and felt incredibly cracker dry on the outside. But apparently the inside still had moisture bc it was rotten when I went back to eat it a week later :frown: This is how I learned to always keep desiccant in with my dried mushies.

Thats why you heavy duty vacuum bag it, or jar that shit...
Sandwich bags do not seal and can be punctured easy by the mush its self

You dont understand. Read mushboys post on drying mushrooms. I honestly thought he was full of shit but everything he said turned out true. I only keep it in a bag for a week before I vacuum seal it.
