Pf tek cakes need help
    #25996057 - 05/16/19 12:21 PM (4 years, 10 months ago)

I followed the tek measurements and boiled my jars last night and this morning they look like this. Is this ok or should I start over.

Looks like you didn't mix it well enough. You have clumps of rice instead of it being evenly distributed. mix your ingredients before adding the water to prevent this next time. Sometimes I'll wet my verm first then add the rice flour a little at a time until it's all mixed evenly. Now will these jars still colonize fine? Maybe maybe not. I haven't had this problem before. I imagine the mycelium would have a difficult time colonizing those clumps and they could cause wet spot bacteria. I would wait and see if someone with experience with this problem has some advice before tossing them. Doesn't look good to me but for all I know they might do fine :shrug:

I used coarse vermiculite which I think changed the way things set. I should've soaked the vermiculite first then added the BRF like u said cause I feel like that caused the vermiculite not to absorb the water definitely a learning experience.

The verm does seem to absorb water better when hydrated by itself. Coarse verm usually works well in cakes btw so it shouldn't have effected the way it set by much if any. I would definitely try wetting the verm first and then mixing in the brf afterwards. Check for field capacity and add more water if needed or more dry verm if too wet

That will probably not work.

Tek measurements + tek step by step process = success

~~~Disclaimer: Success may not be equal~~
2 cups verm + 1 cup water = mix well with hands
add one cup rice flour = mix well with hands.
fluff with hands
add fluffy mix to jar
top with verm
lid and tinfoil.
2 1/2 hours low boil with lid on
Also I recommend investing in a 15psi pressure cooker asap. Boiling is only so effective. Only had roughly a 60-70% success rate until I bought a pressure cooker. It'll also open up the possibility of sterilizing grains for bulk grows which makes every effort you put into it much more rewarding. You can even go to grow bags before moving to tubs which keeps things simple until you're comfortable with tubs. Also using grow bags for grains versus using jars will allow you to sterilize many times more grain spawn in each go
I will be  buying a PC within the next month just trying to get started and see if I could actually do it before I invest lol. As far as field capacity goes what should I look for? I squeezed the mixture and barely any water dripped like the tek said but this is what I got I'm really having a hard time on that
It really is just that easy. Grab a handful and give it a firm squeeze. You should have roughly 3 or 4 drops of water squeeze out and your good. The moisture content in those jars appears to be on point. I don't see any puddles on the bottom which is a good sign. They just needed to be mixed more.
You might consider making another batch to continue with but keep those jars around to see if you get any contam growth. That'll let you know how well you did as far as sterilizing, without possibly wasting spores
This is one of the jars I did 3 days ago already inoculated. Is this about what I need?
