Remaking this post as the original seemed to have been lost.
I put up a discord server for shroomery folk to congregate and chat. For those who don't know what discord is it's a text and voice chat system. There are text channels (whats mostly used) and voice channels (rarely used but available). We currently have channels for general bullshitting, cultivation, mushroom hunting, gaming, and a meme spam channel for those who like the shitposting of memery.
Discord has both computer and phone apps available for use. If anyone has any questions or needs help with using one of them feel free to post in this thread.
Rules are listed in the rules channel. They are fairly straight forward. Things are not as strict as the pub but not as crazy as the romper room or OTD. The community can mostly moderate itself when it comes to troublemakers and serious issues should be messaged to a mod or admin. Please use the block features as you would the ignore feature here. Drug dealing, encouraging people to hurt themselves or overdose is also a big no no.

As the community there grows we will add features, mods, etc. to keep up with the demand.
This server is unofficial. So bring any complaints or issues to myself or another admin. Posting on the forums with complaints or issues about the discord won't get you anywhere unless I happen to come across it.

still don't actually know shit about discord so don't expect to see me active aside from the tag on my name about whatever game is running on my computer

You can click on the Shroomery Store and change your nickname if you prefer.
unfortunately that is not an option at the moment
thought about changing my discord name over to mndfreeze instead
but not sure how you got the fancy colour on it

Damn phone auto corrected. You can change your nickname in DISCORD to be whatever you want. Discord and the forums are not linked in any way and run completely independent of each other.
The colors are based on your role assignment. Mine is the color it is because I'm an admin. Mods have a different color. Users their own, etc.

The server ebbs and flows just like the forums do. Usually in the evenings there are people talking and throughout the day. Middle of the night it's mostly dead because people are asleep, though we do have some people from the other side of the world.

Because its commonly used, its simple for non-technical people, and that site you linked is silly. Most of its statements apply to just about all software and internet platforms, or are server setup specific. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I can promise you that discord doesn't care about random people talking about mushrooms, nor could they easily track you even if they logged every single blip of text and 99% of the people here on this site run other software that meets all of that "spyware" sites criteria. It's the nature of the internet.
Anyone who is actually concerned that the government is going to come after them for chatting on discord, or somehow trace their mushrooms pictures from this site, etc should be using a VPN anyway, which pretty much stops any chance of you being found unless you post your info somewhere. The shroomery discord server only requires you use some email address to do the verify link (to prevent bot spam). Go make an anonymous hushmail account or something.

Just sitting back doing nothing and hoping for the best doesn't seem like a great idea especially when your website was just hacked. It's not just worrying about the government "coming after you" but why easily hand over this data and peoples identity to be logged for any would be adversary including hackers and journalists in the future.

Everything in life has a benefit/cost ratio. As someone who ran the IRC servers way back in the day when the shroomery had one I can tell you that even that was too complex for a lot of people. You asked Why discord instead of X Y or Z, and I told you. You don't need to use it if you don't want too, no one is forcing you too. People like to chat, the server is fairly busy and we have a lot of regulars and no one is at any more risk there than they are here or anywhere else on the internet. It doesn't get much more anonymous than only requiring an email address, of which anyone can just go make one. Those who are extra paranoid can use a VPN. Discord is popular for other communities outside of this one, and most people including myself are on multiple servers. The software is well built, functions as intended (unlike skype for example, which is a POS) and ease of use/access is important.

There haven't been any problems yet and there probably won't be. You're just being paranoid lol. You can use your only email acct and it won't matter just the same. Rather than complaining about how you think he should run things you can just decline the offer. The reason does not matter since this isn't a negotiable circumstance lol. There's already like more than a thousand people there and most of them aren't likely to migrate. Discord works just fine.

How do I sign into the chat? Im on a different computer then I signed up on, when I click the link in OP it tells me to create an account, how do I sign in as me?

You should be able to just use whatever login/password you setup the first time you connected to discord.
Discord (the application/website/etc) is its own service you create an account on. The link in the OP takes you directly to the shroomery server. Once you have joined a server it gets tied to your account as you can be a part of multiple servers. I'm currently in about 7.

I gave up on Discord a while back, because it's a barren wasteland of idleness.
But since it was the Shroomery, I thought, "Y'know what, I'm gonna make an exception and give it a shot."
I went on, and once again, a barren wasteland of a chat room with nobody chatting. Just a bunch of names on the right hand column. Everyone idle.
What the fuck is the point of Discord?
I tried typing something, but it said I needed permission to chat? The fuck? I tried messaging the moderator, but he didn't reply back.
God, I fuckin hate Discord and its fetishization of idleness.

Lets talk legality. If someone were to advertise their suicide on this discord, could it be linked back to this website? It's been stickied and the admins of the discord don't even correlate with chosen authority figures of this website. It clearly displays negligence upon the Shroomery.org for advertising the channel. I'm not against the Discord, but having it stickied by a mod is a bad choice. Sticky it in a UC like the rest of the nerds fleeing the flames! Jesus Christ it's not rocket science!

Yeah it's kind of snowballed this last year. Current stats after a 30 day 'hasn't logged in' cleanse are 2k users. Usually 380 to 400ish showing themselves 'online' and the rest either hiding in offline mode or not logged in.
We have a lot more coverage in the TC section now, some of whom are TC's on the forums. Cult channel is usually active around the clock mostly.
