New grower.

Hello, basically I've never grown mushrooms before so I wanted to post my terrarium design and see if anything's wrong with it. I plan on using a rubbermaid container, roughly 15 x 20 inches to house 12 cakes. I am going to wrap black trash bags around the sides as I've heard it's a good idea to let light enter through the top alone. For lighting I will probably use something like a 50 watt flourescent light although I would appreciate it if someone could tell me how long I should leave it on each day. For humidity I plan on using the perlite method but I wanted to know if I should have a piece of slanted plexi-glass in the terrerium to keep water from raining down on the mushrooms or is it not needed with this method? Also, what's a good method of increasing the heat if I have to? I was thinking about heat pads but I'm not sure how I would implement it exactly. Thanks alot.

Wrapping trash bags not worth the trouble. As far as light goes ambient light is just fine your light set up is fine. Time per day you could do as little as 20 minutes aday or 12 hours. I once did a test once only exposed to light few second few times a day during fanning and all was very well. Slanted glass not need check out the pmp post. As far as adding heat unless your lower then 65 degrees in your house for fruiting dont bother. If you are incubating get them up to mid 80's and check out the tub in tub with fish tank heater method works very well . Good luck

Alright, I think I'm gonna make a seprate incubater using the tub in tub method. I forgot to mention that I'll be growing in a closet which is why I'm concerned about the temperature. Thanks alot for the help, you've been really helpful.

I was wondering...if I were to cut a cake vertically after it had been colonized and lay it on it's rounded side to fruit would this increase yields at all since it would be increasing the surface space?

You could but I would be worried about contams-why dont you just crumble and case it?

Well basically because this will be my first grow so I want to play it safe for the most part. I think I'm going to take a couple cakes and cut them in half and case them in 4 seprate plastic cups as described in one of the articles on this site and see what happens. Casing really does seem simple enough but again this is my first grow and all.

do a search on "Dunk & Roll"
Very easy to do... said to increase yields (I've never used this technique myself).
Basically... It just involves dunking your cake after birth and rolling in verm...

Interesting...I was curious about something though. As I mentioned I will be using the perlite method, would placing the cakes directly on the perlite for 2 - 3 days after the first flush be as efficient?
I've finally decided on exactly what case I will be using as well, the dimensions are 27-1/8" x 16" x 12-3/8" h (http://www.thecontainerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?PRODID=62430&CATID=64157) Do you guys forsee any problems with a foot of height? I will be growing EQ's btw. Thanks again for the help, I really appreciate it!!

This is a dunk and roll cake.

You have to understand Domey that I have a very lazy spirit, haha! I'll just wrap some black trashbags around em for the incubator, should work out. Very nice picture Maqash! What I will do is grow a few cakes normally, a couple split in half and cased in four plastic cups as I've already said, a few using this dunk and roll method and maybe I'll try just normally casing the rest and just compare the results. I look forward to getting to know these friends, thanks again, you've all been very helpful!!

Yes I've thought of that but on the article that I read on this website it said that the plastic cups are good because it doesn't allow light to enter through the sides. Aside from having to simply go buy some cups is there any way that plastic cups can do harm?

Yeah but if there's no harm in using plastic cups then I think I just rather spend a couple bucks and do that because I might want to start incubating some more while my first grow's fruiting(if all goes well).

So after the first flush can I simply put the cakes directly on the perlite for a couple days instead of placing them in water in a fridge since I don't really have one that I could leave shrooms in?
