sort of hard to be meticulous about poppy planting. The best method is to broadcast the seeds then thin them out later as needed.

a good way to thin them out.......make a mixture of 1 part seeds and 3 parts sand, them just throw it ontop the soil and await. but thinning them out when they get a little older is cool too.

I throw them on top, mixed with sand, and then sprinkle about 1/8" of peat or potting soil on top and make sure to mist with my hose daily so the top layer dosnt dry out. I have a nice 3 week old from planting 4x4" plot with a small sprout every 1" or so. In a few weeks when they start to croud eachother ill thin out the weaklings and shoot for a 3.5-5" plant spacing, 4" is the general goal.

That was easy. Thanks for the advice- I'll sow today. Is there a serious danger of overwatering (I was thinking of just using a watering bucket, but it sounds like I should just mist for the time being, until I see what does and doesn't come up and then decide what to keep and start providing more water as the sprouts grow. How does that sound?

if a poppy patch looks like a nice, thick, green lawn, should you thin early or wait and let nature take it's course?

i'd try to thin it out if it's that' bunched as to look like someone's nicely manicured lawn.

A watering bucket will work good as well. I just find spraying with a hose on mist is allot faster. I watered once every day if it didnt rain and continued for about a week after they sprout. Then cut back to once every 2-4 days or so the larger they get the more water they need. Make sure you mix hay into the soil or at least turn it and flaten and pat it down lightly with a 2x4.
