Voters in Denver, Colorado decided on Tuesday to decriminalize psilocybin, or "magic mushrooms," by a thin margin.
The initiative, led by Decriminalize Denver, passed by 1,979 votes when the voting tallies for Initiated Ordinate 301 were released on Wednesday.
TWO-THIRDS OF AMERICANS BLAME DRUG COMPANIES FOR OPIOID CRISIS, NEW POLL SAYS
According to online results from the Denver Elections Division, 89,320 people voted in favor of decriminalizing, while 87,341 others voted against it. Election officials said on Twitter that the "results remain unofficial" until they are certified on May 16.
The measure makes the personal use and possession of psilocybin mushrooms by those 21 years of age or older Denver's "lowest law-enforcement priority," according to the measure's language. It does not legalize psilocybin or permit its sale by Denver's cannabis businesses.

Psilocybin is a "hallucinogenic chemical obtained from certain types of fresh and dried mushrooms." Federally illegal in the U.S. since 1968, psilocybin is categorized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) under "Schedule I," along with drugs like heroin, marijuana and LSD.
Medical researchers have found the substance can be used to help treat anxiety and depression in cancer patients. Those studies were small and closely supervised but the preliminary results gave researchers hope that psychedelic drugs could also be used to treat cancer, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

I was a bit disappointed yesterday when I looked on the last update and "no" won. But it's so close everything can happen. I hope the yes wont become a no again, there's still some votes to count before the 16:th.

The taste keeps naive people from eating too many. And people know not to eat too many chocolates, shrooms don't have the euphoria of say MDMA which leads to compulsive dosing and chasing the ultimate high.

When Denver decriminalized cannabis I was tempted to move there. Now I don't smoke weed and they move on to decriminalizing shrooms too!
I was really surprised to see this happen. The weed wasn't surprising at all but there are so many ignorant people out there that still think psilocybin mushrooms make your brain bleed and that's why you hallucinate.
Hallucinogens seem to be almost completely unknown to the average person. If they do know something about them it's often some sort of propaganda from the government or doctor.
I wonder what else will be decriminalized....

My wife and I were just talking about this. Oakland also decriminalized about a month after Denver and Santa Cruz, CA decriminalized in January of this year. Baby steps but steps in the right direction, no less.
