Weird stem deformities, has my cake aborted?
    #25973473 - 05/05/19 08:53 AM (5 years, 8 months ago)

Guys, I've read some other posts about the entire cake aborting but I'm still not sure if that's happening to me. I have no black caps but no growth and weird issues on their tiny little stems.
Could any of the more wise mages here tell me what they think is going on?

So this is my set-up. I have a 65qrt tote SGFC sitting inside a water tank made from another similar tote.
The tank has 4 inches of water and an aqarium heater set to 75 degrees. It's cold here.
The SGFC has 3 inches of air between it and the water in the tank.
SGFC has 1/4 inch holes (2 inches apart) on all 6 sides and 5 inches of perlite.
The top of the tank is level with the top of the perlite in the SGFC and there's a 1 inch gap between the SGFC and the tank all round. Will this be a problem for air getting into the bottom of the SGFC?

Oh, and I didn't make the cake myself, it's from a grow-kit I got online. I know, I know, that's a dirty word in these here parts but I had access to it so went with it.

Cake was submerged for 24 hours and I used CBK's double dunk method to cover it but the sides didn't really take. The top seemed good but there are almost no pins up there so maybe not.

The cake is resting in a tray for Violets bottom-watering.
The whole thing is beside a window that isn't very well sealed but it has good indirect light.

So there has been an explosion of pins and then they all stalled. I'm not sure how long it took them to grow to this size but they've been stalled for over a week now.

The pins themselves have started splitting. The stem has a layer peeling off it like bark off a tree.
They're also covered in a white fuzz.

Then there's the blue mycelium. Is that psilocybin or mould?

Most of the pins are around the top rim but there were some nice breakouts on the bottom too.

So have I killed my babies?

When I was taking the pics, I re-soaked the perlite and gave the cake a strong mist on all sides.
Then I fanned for about two minutes, much more than I usually do.
Do you think that will help? How long do you guys usually fan for?
Should I fill the foil saucer a bit?

Do I need to pull all and re-dunk?
So much confusion.

This is my third attempt to fail. Not one mushy grew in the first two kits. This is my first FGFC though.

Any help would be very welcome.

That is one massive cake!

Perhaps its too dry in there. Looks like u made a SGFC but used coir instead of perlite.....

Overall thou, it looks healthy.

Try the q-tip test on the blue parts. Rub a q-tip gently on the surface, if the q-tip is now blue, it's mold. If it's not, it's bruising.

It looks super dry. Give it some good misting.

Thanks guys, I'll try the q-tip test later.

What do you all think of the pins? Have they aborted?
They haven't grown since I originally posted so it looks that way even though the caps are not black.
And what's with the peeling on the stems, anyone ever seen that before?

The SGFC has perlite LogicaL ChaosM and it was well soaked.
My house is a little drafty so maybe that's contributing to the dryness.
Would it be drier if I used coir? I haven't seen that used in SGFC's on here.

Anyway, I'll have a check and get back to you guys.

Quick update for you guys.

I soaked the brick overnight and have switched to leaving it in a dish raised above some water with an air stone and an aquarium heater in it at 75 degrees.
New tote with no holes in it.

That should keep the temp and the humidity up shouldn't it?
Plenty of FAE too. I fan it too just in case.

I'll dribble some water into the dish if I get new pins.
The old aborts looked a bit too funky so I removed them.

So, what do y'all think?

Take some new pics. Setup sounds fine IMO, and i really wish i had an answer about the peeling. It's weird and really cool, i'm too n00bie to say what could cause that. Do you still have perlite in as a base? As far as FAE goes, if you put the lid on upside down, or fashion it any way that the lid sits about 1/4"-1/2"  above the tub all the way around (doesn't have to be exact, you'll find what works for you), that should be good. It shouldn't dry out too fast.
