Repairing a Piston Head
    #25979119 - 05/08/19 03:24 AM (4 years, 8 months ago)

So i want to repair a piston head for a 2-stroke engine. It has a "crater" on the top.

My idea was to by JB ExtremeHeat Epoxy on it: https://m.ebay.com/itm/Part-37901-J-B-Weld-Co-JB-Weld-3-OZ-Extreme-Heat-Hi-Temp-Resistant-Paste-Epox-/153080472563?_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1

Will it work? Will it last? Should i just plan on replacing the piston head (a complex task)?

Yes, replace the piston. You don't want that gunk rattling round in a cylinder unless you want to damage the whole head.

it won't

replace the piston before you fuck up the cylinder and/or the rod.

even moments can do damage.

Definitely.

Im ordering a new piston next spring season. They seem to be the one part that wears out fast on jetskis, at least the one I own.

oooohh gotcha.  Super common problem.  People like to get on them an GO, so that creates problems.  They sieze and break free, which can chip off material.  Scoring and damage to rings are both very common.  Material might land in the crankcase or be expelled.  Likely expelled if the damage is where I think you're saying it was.  While you're in there, get you a couple things like a rebuild kit for your carb (cheap), inspect crank, lines, etc...

Yeah, I think I have to tune the carb. Its a condition called "piston burndown". Something about being too lean I believe? I gotta learn to tune that carb.

Yup- running lean is gonna damage the crown, for sure.  It's just turning a couple screws.  Wonder how your plugs look.

Could the plugs timing also contribute to the burn-down effect?

Well... only if your plugs weren't seated correctly and air entered the cylinder and leaned out the mix.  Sometimes they loosen up while you ride, and it's worth checking the torque periodically to make sure one hasn't loosened up after some riding.  I would say that in your case, it was likely lean carb jetting which caused overheating.  Especially if you've never adjusted your carb.  Again this is the most likely casue, although there are a couple other things that (especially on older engine- think seals/gaskets) that can cause overheating of the piston/failure.

Edit: I need to learn how to read before I post.  While the above is true (I just saw the word "timing" for some reason.  This is what I get for posting before coffee...).  Ignition timng can definately contribute to failure (too high & pressure created during combustion too high and causes damage).  I doubt that's your key problem though.  A complete teardown will be an awesome learning experience for you and will enable you to eliminate all present and future (controllable) problems.  Thank God for the internet age and cheap(ish) parts/kits!!  Woohoo!

Update. Im getting my jet ski ready for tomorrow (Memorial Day!) for the lake and I checked out the piston head I repaired.

The Bad news is the repair is gone (burned away). You can still see some of the remnants in the center-left of the piston head:

The Good news is theres no damage to the cylinder:

So this repair does work but it doesnt last very long. I think I rode my ski like 3 times last year or something.

Its great for a temporarily fix but definitely not a long term fix at all. Looks like Im going to have to replace the piston as Jokeshop mentioned. Damn.

Go ahead and get used to rebuilding the moter. Two strokes are notorious for blowing up.
Good luck lodge.

Idk what it's called. Ive always called it blowing the moter.

I had two blaster 200s. One was bored out to a 240. Im not very mechanically inclined but i paid to have it rebuilt quite a few times. Never go cheap. Never cut corners. It cost more in the long run.

Cancelling my piston repair, my SteelStick High-Temp Repair Epoxy hardened up in the container. It is useless. I guess its one-time use only. Still going to the Lake tomorrow thou.

Also my phone isnt working right so no pics of my awesome cleaning job.

Looking for my trailer hitch.....I cant seem to find it.....

Blowing up a motor usually means total destruction of the motor, like a piston rod goes thru the engine itself, at least thats my definition. What my engine is doing is called Piston Burn Down.

Think about the job the piston does in a combustion engine. NASA's JB weld isn't going to work either.

Steel. Or Titanium. I think high-temp JB weld is made with titanium powder. Or maybe its just steel powder.

Bodhi, does NASA make a retail JB weld for rockets?!

You don't have a titanium piston.

And no nasa doesn't sell anything like that I was being facetious

With very very few exceptions pistons are made of aluminum.

I know its not titanium. I was saying pistons are either steel OR titanium. I was thinking of getting one but they are very expensive.

Thats too bad, i was ready for some Rocket-Grade SteelStick.

I guess you just don't have access to a wire feed welder or something.
