Substrate conditions? Pics
    #25978760 -

How are my substrates looking? I've got one give to hell, makes me worried about the rest. I keep the lids on but slid back an inch or so. The mono, I have the top holes open.Any and all suggestions welcome, please.

They look dry and matted, it looks like you made your sub on the dry side and tried to make up for it with misting.

Never misted, can I save it?

It doesn't need saving. It should start pinning any time now, the pinset may not be the greatest. This is where hands on experience is invaluable. You learn it by doing it.

I agree with him, have to find that sweet spot for moisture. My first few looked just like this and i had a couple way worse. If its too dry a bottom water could be a good idea, though normally you shouldnt have to before the first flush. Definitely the kind of thing where practice is everything.

I do feel like I made my sub on the dry side. I put directly to fruiting conditions by putting a tub on top, but I now feel like I might have had them in a bad spot, all next to each other in a bookcase. Would them being surrounded like that cause not enough FAE??? And I did think about bottom watering, how much water for how long???  I wanna thank everyone for helping me, I'm so glad this community helps each other, I'm so grateful

Here's a trick if you find the pinset inadequate - you can use wax paper as a pseudo casing to encourage pinning. Just mist it and leave it overnight with a fan blowing away from the tub, usually helps alleviate a matted surface. Another option is a very light (and I mean very light, maybe 1/8 thick and spread loosely) second casing. I actually have fixed tubs that refused to pin in the center like this. It's a wonderful feeling. When you go from a crappy 150 gram wet side pi. Flush to a 500 gram canopy on the same tub. Like I said, it comes with experience, you'll learn what they need, this is the part that all the reading in the world can't teach you.

Thank you, I can't wait to try those techniques out. I might do one tub with wax paper and one with a very light pseudo casing. You are a x-man in my book. I could jump from Joy right now 😆😆😆😆😆

I wouldn't listen to that wax paper shit.

Your tubs look fine just be patient. Give a light mist but mist the air above so the mist settles like morning dew on the surface.

The only thing prof x said that made any sense is you learn by doing. So pay attention to your subs surfaces. Would be kinda hard with wax paper covering them:rolleyes:

Like to see that. Have any pic of you using it on your tubs?

Of the second casing or wax paper? Wax paper is an old trick, RR used to suggest it. The pseudo casing is common knowledge. Do you seriously doubt that? I have pictures of a canopy pinset from a double casing tub. I also have pictures of a 500 gram wet flush from the same shoebox. Surface conditions are easy to control if you understand physics and have a little bit of botanical experience. It's all about making your organism happy.

Misting the sub and leaving wax paper on it overnight will cause as much harm  as well it wont. I dont care if youve been growing mushrooms since Jesus walked the Earth you aren't much of a mycologist and you are obviously not a physicist. You're extra abrasive fam.

Lots of insecurity around here

You provide information from ancient days on every post I see and frequently get shot down and called out on your input by trusted growers and people with knowledge around here. Since you’ve joined I haven’t read one decent recommendation from you

Professor like to see the wax paper thing.

Casing is standard practice so I have seen plenty of tubs with that.

Just never seen wax paper used, so I am curious.

If I need to use it in the future I'll take some pics. You basically wad the paper up then flatten back out so that it's wrinkled and mist the sub then place over the surface. Pins should develop in 8 to 12 hours and the mycellium won't attempt to colonize the wax so it doesn't slow anything down. This is a technique most effective when using modified tubs.

What information from ancient days are you referring to? I don't care if you trust me man, I have a closet full of tubs and a closet full of jars, all of them are healthy. I don't even share some of the ways I do things because it would be a shit storm of naysayers and the methods aren't newbie friendly. A lot of what happens around here is complicating the uncomplicated and simplifying complex processes to the point of failure.

Yes, it works on all containers with a flat substrate.
