Turning .exe files into sound (a how to)

Last night while messing around with some music and talking to a friend he informed me of a thing he found on some message board somewhere.  Which was taking an exe and making sound out of it.

For me, Soundforge wouldn't open them up and told me that it was an unsupported file format.  Cool edit, on the other hand worked perfectly.  All you need to to do in cool edit is right click on the empty track> insert .wav from file search for some random exe (my example will the shortcut i have on my desktop to musicmatch).  You'll probably get a lot of *loud* static, so if you have headphones on you will want to turn them down, or turn the tracks volume down.  The bigger the exe the longer the wav file it will be.  But anyhoo, the first half will be lots of static and towards the middle it will start having blippy type sounds then after that it will be the area that you'll probably want to hear.  And voila!  lots of neat sounds at your disposal that you previously might not have known how to get :wink:

you can do the same in audacity, which is cool open source project. get it from sf.net ... import then slow it down, otherwise it will be too quick

Yeah man, you can get all kinds of wacky sounds like that. The thing I also like about cool edit is that you can take out hiss/pops and all of that nonsense, then do whatever effects you want on it there. I'm not sure if you can do that in audacity or not. Either way, it's pretty interesting.
