Drug paraphernalia that's 1,000-years-old still contains traces of coke and DMT * 8

    (The items) include a 28-centimetre-long leather bag, a pair of wooden snuffing tablets, a snuffing tube, a pair of llama-bone spatulas, a textile headband, fragments of dried plant stems and a pouch made from three fox snouts stitched together. The snuffing tube and tablets feature ornate carvings of human-like figures.

    Melanie Miller at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and her colleagues used mass spectrometry to analyse samples from the pouch and plant stems. They detected five psychoactive compounds: cocaine, benzoylecgonine (BZE), bufotenine, harmine and dimethyltryptamine (DMT).

    The presence of these drugs suggests the pouch may have belonged to a ritual specialist or shaman with extensive knowledge of plants and their psychoactive properties, and used to hold leaves, seeds and other plant matter.

Hard to say, but I may make a few enemies with my next statement.  If I had access to those pipes, I would take a run with them before storing them away safely:hehehe:

Thatā€™s pretty cool about those snouts though, Iā€™ve never seen that before I donā€™t think.  South America is fuckin epic, if I had a time machine thatā€™s where Iā€™m heading right off the bat.. it would probably be frightening.

They say bufotenine, harmine, dmt. Sounds much like it would be traditional aya. I dont think they separated anything.

dont know shit about new zealand besides that's where they shot the torah. I'm fairly sure with out clicking a link the artifacts came from south america

Though ayahuasca is touted today as an ā€œancientā€ preparation, the actual age of the brew and ritual are contested. Right but wouldnā€™t they mention the plants like with the cannabis stems?  The cocaine isnā€™t leaves, you know what I mean?  Someone is doing chemistry out there in the woods..  Iā€™m curious what the tek was since Home Depot hadnā€™t kicked off yet, what were they using?

Also if theyā€™re doing that, theyā€™re doing all kinds of things I would think in terms of chemistry etc.  Iā€™m not sure what is ā€œconsidered to have been known by these peopleā€ so I donā€™t know what is odd for what we thought they were.

Cocaine extractions go back further than 2000 years, and probably older. Plant based extractions in general are not some long forgotten technique really. I don't know about powdered cocaine and stuff, but they had oils available.

South American cultures had alcoholic beverages prior to  Western colonization as well.

I guess that makes sense.  Truth be told I have no idea how long chemistry and itā€™s methods go back, hadnā€™t really directly thought about it.  Iā€™d love to know what things and methods they used..Iā€™ll have to look all that up:thumbup:
