An association sounds like a complexity of simple interactions. Regardless of differences in mechanics or stages, they seem the same to me in computation defined as input output mapping.

nope
it is
A) when multiple inputs (impressions) activate neurons which link to create an association group of the activation group of neurons.
and later
B) when some similar inputs reactivate resting neurons to reawaken the whole associated pattern.

both processes are really one thing in the brain and both processes are continuous while conscious, however the brain homeostatically increases and decreases how much of A or B is going on, and how resonantly each impression is sustained.

yes a computer could simulate this, but this is nothing like what is in computers today, neither in hardware nor in software.

It still sounds like input output mapping, based in simple signals as said. I thought of birds in murmuration. It can interact as a whole, but it is one thing leading to another, or many things leading and reacting, but made by elements like vectors, ones and zeros. Vectors can be of any dimension, adding some intrigue.

only a bit like murmuration, these neurons are always in the same formation, just active or not active for each signal of sensation (including each pixel from the retina)

the neurons are not entities - rather they are more like blinking switches that each connect to 100000 other switches through branching axons.

they will activate (start blinking) with live sensory signals or with at least 7 branches active sychronously touching them (associative reactivation or perception).

Can a computer programmer make something in code associate with another thing?

yes
a lot of work is going on in this domain now.
