First king oyster straw logs (pics!)

So I just unwrapped these logs last night after I noticed they all had a ton of primordia and pins.
I’m cycling the humidity in the fruiting chamber between 85% and 90% with 4 fresh air exchanges an hour per Stamet’s bible. They are also getting 12 hours of 5000K (best I could find) 1000 lumen LED light exposure a day. Is this still considered more or less ideal? Any advice or adjustments I should consider? I know oysters, especially here in the PNW, can do better outdoors but I’m breaking in this fruiting chamber and am curious how it will perform since I want to grow year round.

I like your GH! Hoping to get a king oyster wedge n the mail soon from the wedge thread. How long did the colonization take?

Thanks! I’m still fine tuning the contraption but I think its doing pretty well.
It took 2 weeks to the day before I noticed the pins. They weren’t there Monday night and I noticed them on all the logs last night. Goes pretty fast. There are one or two spots on one of the logs that maybe stayed too wet and didn’t colonize so I am a little worried about a contam but I have good FAE and there is a mild constant circulation to, I hope, reduce the risk.
Good luck with your culture! Are you going to grow it out on agar and put it on grains or what’s your plan?

That’s the plan! Agar is my favourite part, love watching the myc grow. I’ve been trying to find straw pellets just for easiness. For now all my gourmets have been on hwfp blocks (and really just beginning, gotten some yellow oysters so far). I’ve heard king oyster is harder but what makes them different?

I have no idea. This is my first time with any oyster but I’ve heard that king’s are pretty easy relative to others like shiitake and medicinals. Not sure about other oysters though... Kings definitely have been pretty straightforward compared to the others I’m working on (shiitake, reishi, lions mane).
I’m sure you’ll do great with a clean wedge of agar. I probably should have gone that route. I used a MS syringe on rye and then took the chance and did a G2G off that. Going to try my hand at cloning with the best looking ones off this grow. Too much fun.

Would recommend leaving plastic on and top fruit kings. They take lots of water because of the amount of fruits. Straw tends to dry out easily if sub is all exposed

Makes sense. I was planning on dunking overnight after the first flush but I want to get the most out of it obviously. So would you just make a long cut on the top of the log or a few 2-3” cuts or what? I know about the “humidity tent” but I didn’t want a lot of fruits poking through the shelving for ease of harvest. Thanks!

The bad thing with kings is that most pins like to abort, and only a few grow full size. As Quadman said, is better to keep the plastic to avoid drying the substrate. I encourage you to try different methods with the logs. I have seen growers make holes or slits in different areas of the log, where the pins developed into nice fruits, but top fruit also works nicely. With kings, I personally prefer less pins but healthy ones, rather than a full pinset that most times is going to abort in favor to few mushrooms. Supplementation also plays a role into the number of pins that are going to mature, the more supplementation the better

i just open the top end of the bag. Letting the plastic stick up a few inches.
The picture has kings growing inside an open bag. I would cut it off about 3 or 4 inches above the substrate.

Pretty fine!
Inocybe, what are you supplementing with? Do supplement between flushes?

I normally do oak sawdust/chips supplemented with 10% wheat bran and 10% dried spent coffee grounds, but I bet they would love more supplementation.
Supplementation between flushes seems tricky, as the block already colonized and consolidated, so it would be necessary to scratch and mix up some supplementation I guess, but I don't know how it would work. Have you tried that?

No, just wondering if maybe injecting a supplement would hydrate and add nutrition.... I add bran to my fruiting blocks already, 1 1/4 cups to 5 cups (dry) hwfp. I’ve never added coffee.

Kings I use 30% soy hulls plus a qrt jar of grain.

Pardon my ignorance, what does that acronym stand for? I have just started gourmets today (got yellow oysters and loins mane on agar) and bring to absorb all info I can.
Thanks

I use a recipe from FRESH CAP MUSHROOMS BASIC FRUIT BLOCK but I’ve been trying to source straw pellets to try and also soy hulls for this MASTERS MIX. The hwfp fruit block has done very well for me so far but always want to try others.

Well, that was not how I hoped it would go... Logs lost a ton of moisture, I think. The fruits only grew a couple inches, stopped, and started to shrivel... so I just buried them halfway in the backyard and put the sprinkler on them for a while... fuck it.
I think I made too many holes in the plastic bag and didn’t pack it nearly tight enough. Live and learn. Will try again. I probably could have let them colonize/consolidate more.
How long do you all soak your straw? I know with dish soap you can do it in a couple hours but otherwise, I’ve read 24 should be enough but wondering if there is any benefit to a longer soak?

Temps are a little warm for Kings if you're in the pnw. Keep them mulched tho and perhaps you'll get a better fruiting when temps go down.
I think 24 hours is plenty even 8-12 is sufficient for soaking straw.
If you soak for a long time like 3-7 days you'll start to get aenorbic fermentation which has the potential to supplant other forms of pasteurisation.
I like to fruit Kings just like other oysters, from small holes or X's cut into their bag. And I pack straw tight in those bags.
Here's a pic of Kings on cardboard and wood chips:
