early harvesting
    #2596452 - 04/23/04 09:58 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

Hey, great site youve got here....to bad about that patriot act eh?

I was wondering, I have read the best time to harvest mushrooms is when the vale is parting from the cap. Can you harvest before the vale breaks and expect some reasonably potent results?

one more question....

some jars are taking their time colonizing, should I put them in a blender and then put the substrate back in the jars to speed things up?

thanks

Yup, they'll be at least as potent if not more so, but you'll have less to consume...patience is worth it but if you're dead set then by all means eat up!!!!

thanks,

I'm new as well but yes, from what I've read their potency is in their prime just before/as the vale begins to break but as mockeylock pointed out, there won't be as much to consume. Basically they'll be more potent by square inch for example but there won't be as many square inches.

I forsee massive contamination unless you can guarantee absolute sterility during the whole process. Let them go, perhaps flipping the jars may help...

So would you say that bigger= stronger or is there a time when a mushroom will have all the Ps. it is going to have? I realise this kind of thing could have tons of variables but the oppinion of an expirienced grower would mean a lot to someone who is growing nothing. Such as myself.

Thanks again for your advice.

say you've got two gt's you wanna sample. Both are about three inches tall. Neither have a separated vale. would you trip harder if you waited till monday to harvest them....getting really anxous.

I refuse to enter the potency debate but I will tell you this:

Picking the mushrooms too early will lower overall yields from each cake (or casing). Personally, I pick mine before the veil breaks to eliminate spore load. I would let them grow up to be sure you actually have enough. You must understand that the mushrooms do not lose Psilocin or Psilocybin, but supposedly production of said alkaloids drops off when spore production has begun. Thus, mushroom mass increases while alkaloid content stays the same.

IMO you have nothing to lose letting them grow, while picking them early may not allow you enough material to consume...

I would wait till mature. the beauty of a a sporulating mature cubensis is reason enough

and I also think the "pick before the viel breaks for maximum potency" is bs as well

I decided to wait. ever get a impulsive feeling that will ony go away with time or by fufilling your craving? Just went through one. Have gt's growing off bag from sporeworks. salvaged half after infection happend on uncolonized protion of the bag. Had to birth it early as a result. Ended up cold shocking it to initiate a humble pin set. I only have about five potential mushrooms. I am however pleased that the worst of my potential outcomes did not come to fruition. After the pins set I put some vermiculite in with water and peroxide. Crumbled the colonized substrate and spread it over the vermiculite, I say crumbled but I just broke up the pieces between the largest "mushrooms" and cased it in baked supersoil and vermiculite. I mist it once a day and fluctuate the temp and humidity....any sugjestions would be most welcome.
