A few images of one of my Oak logs, this is a clone from a fresh fruit body from the store.

nice donko ones!! what trick do you use to keep slugs at bay?
I just soaked some of my logs this week, hope they fruit because I let them unattended and I fear the mycelium could be dead if they dried too much

Thanks
Yes, if you don't do something with these outdoor fruiting logs the slugs will ruin your harvest, I've screwed large hooks into the top of the logs and hung them from a thin rope, it seems to be working so far.
I wouldn't worry about them drying out too much, as long as the logs were reasonably fresh when inoculated they should have enough moisture in them, after the soak they will be fine.

Still got a couple of hundred logs left from my log operation. I stopped doing logs in 2013 and converted to substrate. The logs that were inoculated a long time ago still carry mushrooms in fall and spring. If they do I bring them into my current grow room. Glad I'm doing sub now, less heavy and more profitable In 2009 I had 5000 logs in production. My back still hurts...

5000 logs is a lot!!
I like them as a alternative way to grow few shiitake long term without the stress of the bags. Last year I did nearly 30 logs or so, I plan to make new ones each year (and other species too) to have shiitake for years and save the greenhouse to grow other species.
I'm worried about logs being too dry, because today I take a log that was soaking for 2 days that weighted 10,350kg when fresh, and I weighted it again today and it was 9kg. The humidity of a sample slice of the fresh logs that was oven dried gave me a humidity of 36,52% (maybe not too accurate and the logs could have more humidity than 36,52%). If I use that data, the log that was soaked now has 27% humidity even having a 2 day soak, which is too low. I thought that maybe as the shiitake decay and "breathe" the log will also lose some weight, but not sure if it is still a lot to be lost in just 1 year from inoculation.
Anyway, some logs seem nice with healthy mycelium (the wider ones keep humidity better), so lets see if they fruit again.
Today I made a slug barrier (I don't like baits), hope it works. It is a water wall that slug and snails shouldn't be able to cross. It was an idea I had on mind for long time but always seemed a pita to make to me, but with some gutters I made a nice moat

Good idea, the slug barrier. Logs do indeed give less stress. The only stressful moment is the inoculation. Once the mycelium is installed you don't have to worry much. I had thousands of logs in super dry conditions and they almost always survived the drought.
They flush even better after a period of drought. Excessive moist conditions for a long period harm them more than no water at all. Although I must say that I stocked them in a deep valley near a stream, so conditions were naturally ideal. Still RH of the air got often down to 30% or less.
Slugs didn't bother me much because I fruited in a huge fruiting shed. Wich meant carrying about hundred logs a day out of incubation, soak them, put them into fruiting and after picking carry them out again. That's why my back hurts. Worst of all I never really made any money with it. Logs are great for fun but don't believe you can make a living out of it...

I think it's probably normal for logs to lose mass during colonization.
I think I remember reading that the mass of straw logs can be converted into as much as 50% CO2 when being consumed by oysters.

hey all .. this is for the fist time i am growing shiitake.. does the shiitake have the tendency of forming clumps of mycelium like oyster pins inside the bags. are these pins or is it just ageing. or is it not shiitake at all.

the variety is the natural log one (M290)

The water moat was a success to avoid slugs! no one crossed it

This week harvested some nice shiitakes and this last days cause of the hotter dry days some pretty donko ones too
