Q on how to prevent airborne contamination

setting: growing my mycellium on rye berries after well grown transferred to mono tub with coir/perilite mix. tried to hydrate my mix to dampness by boiled hot water.
After some time I did see the mycellium growing until...
For 3 straight grow attempts I got this dark mildewed looking stuff when it should be nice white mycellium. At first I thought my mix is too wet. But my last 2 attempts were better but eventually the same. I believe I'm getting airborne contamination within my house because I did to open the mono tub to get some airflow. (my tub has 6 holes with pillow insulation as filler)
Q Did I open the tub lid to early? If so, do I not need to open the tub until ....when?

You need to make clean spawn. Air doesnt contaminate substrates.

Did you put spores directly on grain? If so agar is the solution. If not Post pics of your agar and fully colonized grain
Also donβt put perlite in monotubs. Maybe vermiculite, but it isnt necessary.
Another thought, was it miracle grow perlite with added fertilizer? Thatβll cause contams for sure.

Sorry, i meant vermiculite, and yes I used agar which has worked very well. So, if air doesn't contaminate substrates then my mix must have been contaminated.
I used coco coir. Should I sterilize it?

Bucket tek, sterilize, pour sink water on it and use it directly. whatever helps you sleep at night. It probably wasnβt the coco
Your grain was likely contaminated. I repeat:

Build a positive pressure clean room with hepa intake and a flowhood inside but running all the time.
Or just make cleaner spawn That picture u posted looks like garbage to me.

That looks terrible.
You need to do more agar work before going to grains.

That jar is swimming in bacteria, it's way too wet and improperly sterilized. Proper grain prep and sterilization are the keystone in this hobby. You could spawn those in front a a flow hood, wouldn't matter. That is too much contamination to save it from. When you break it up and spawn it every little tiny spot that isn't colonized is going to mold within hours.
