Grain bags failed... Time for jars?
    #25959341 - 04/27/19 06:07 PM (5 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys,

First, I know, the consensus here is grain bags can work, but mostly aren't recommended. On that note, I ordered 2 rye grain bags. They are actually doing quite well. I inoculated them with B+, and the bags are 40-50% colonized going strong. About a week later, I received two five grain spawn bags. I used the other syringe of the same strain from the same vendor. I followed the exact steps I did with the first two bags, and left incubating at 76 degrees. 10 days later, I have seen zero growth from either of the five grain spawn bags. Assuming they were no good, I broke them up to see if there was any mycelium growth inside. There was not, and once I repacked it down, I noticed that both bags had a sweet/sour odor coming from the filter patches.

So - my question is, what the fuck? Why did these two bags go bad when I replicated what I did with the two bags that went well? There are also no signs of contam, just some we grain since there has been no growth... I assume now though, that, because there is no groth and they smell like shit, they're toast. Thankfully my other bags are doing well.

Therefore, I think it's time to get some jars. I was going to inoculate follow this tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23688752#23688752

My next question is, how do you guys feel about buying jars vs. making them? I know it's probably cheaper to DIY, but I have no brf or mason jars of any kind. If inoculated properly, does buying substrate jars make a difference opposed to making them?

My last question is about spawn bags. I happened to go through my local farmers market and noticed a local, small, vendor selling seemingly comprehensive spawn bags. I was thinking they might have more love and care than an online - mass producing vendor. What do you guys think? Would love some feedback!!

You are using syringes. Every inoculation is a crap-shoot. Your other bags were lucky is all. If you don't learn agar, this is how it will be every time, some work, some don't.

Grain bags are fine, spore syringe to grain is a gamble. Buying presterilized bags is a gamble

Shooting spores into presterilized grainbags is a double gamble, you really want to skew the odds in your favor as much as possible when growing mushrooms

Spend 80$ on a pressure cooker, you’ll thank yourself later. Maybe gram’s has one in the attic for canning beans, or maybe you can find one at a thrift store for 20$. Definitely a worthy investment, especially if you’re serious about growing mushrooms.

I have a friend who has one I can use. What tek should I follow? The one I linked to, where you make your own?

Even if you find a PC, I'd go for PF Tek if I weren't planning to do agar.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15223324

I find grains so much versatile than PF Teks, but if you don't have a clean culture to start from it's risky and in my opinion it will depend too much of your luck. PF Tek is a safer and instructive way.

Anyway, if you are planning to continue cultivating, I'd recommend you a lot getting some agar. It will take a bit of time until you can start to inoculate grains, but it'll be completely worth it. You can do PF Teks while you are starting with agar too.

Read the sticky posts and look around here

If you injected spore syringe into premade grain expect failure
