I don't see any reason not to, but all I hear people doing with coir or straw is pasteurizing. Of course I know with coir, most people buy the brick and not the already-loose kind... but in that case, why not wet and expand the coir and THEN put it in the pc?

Some people do that. But not necessary. Just add boiling water and its good to go.

No need really, I steam mine to bring it up to high heat in a crab cooker, but we have one for cooking crab, so, there’s that. You can do it In a pc, but there’s other ways to cook it that are a little more low tech. I’ve heard some don’t even heat it, but the only time I had cobweb is when I didn’t heat it, but cobweb and trich die at something like 130° f.

Sterilized substrate will contaminate much faster than pasteurized substrate, when exposed to unfiltered air.

You get there quicker just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark, another to bite

If we're talking about coir, it doesn't matter if it's pasteurized or sterilized. I hear you can straight up PC it black and its still fine. I wanna say I read you can just hydrate with regular tap to field capacity and spawn and it would be okay. (i'd love to know if this holds truth btw) It's pretty contam resistant. Straw is not that way tho and neither is hpoo.

Don’t take that as solid proof, but they do die at lower temps than a lot of bacteria. I believe I read an old paper that mentioned one species of trich dying at 131°f when held for 30 minutes. Think I googled trichorerma thermal death or something like that. I stick a meat thermometer in my substrate bags and bring it to 160°, and they take a long time to come down in temp. Coir doesn’t hold a lot of living organisms, or at least they don’t grow off of it.
