Outdoor azurescens bed, next steps?
    #25950775 - 04/23/19 12:03 PM (5 years, 8 months ago)

So I have 10 quarts of azure rye colonizing nicely off one quart G2G from a MS syringe for an outdoor bed. I live in the PNW. Here is what I am planning next:

1. Pasteurize about 40 lbs of re-hydrated douglas fir wood pellets (“100% natural/no additives) supplemented with gypsum and wheat bran at about 5% of the sawdust dry weight and spawn the grain to that and let colonize in some plastic storage totes.

2. Build a 4’x’8’ raised bed (12” deep) and line it with garden fabric.

3. Put an inch or so of perlite in the bottom for a moisture buffer.

4. The bed will be mostly shaded anyway but I am going to put a piece of 1” 4’x8’ lattice for additional shade but to also let the rain in.

5. Once the sawdust is fully colonized, I will put a couple inches of doug fir fines/wood chips down, layer the colonized sawdust, then a couple more inches of fines/wood chips. Case with 1”-2” straw.

6. Water about once a week once the rainy season is over and wait until fall to see what happens.

Any flaws, errors, or things I should change? Substrate too deep? Anyone have success? What did you do? I’ll start posting pics of the process if this sounds legit. Thanks!

You are not supposed to inoculate outdoor beds with grain, as animals are said to dig them up and I'm the process destroy your bed.

Use the grain to inoculate cardboard and then bury that under the wood

Good point... well shit... going to inoculate a LOT of cardboard. lol Might just put chicken wire or something to keep the squirrels and mice out of it until the fall? Grains will be pretty much digested by then, I would think?

Probably so. I guess it would depend on where you live too. I once chucked a fairly fresh sub out and had no problems. I'm sure if i did it in my new neighborhood it would quickly become squirrel food
