Question about PC

I finally purchased a PC to sterilize my own grain. It will only go up to 9psi. Is there a way I can work with it or do I need to get a different one?

Will it not go uo that high because that's as high as it goes period, or because that's as high as your stove can get it?
Either way you just process for a longer time.

It won’t go any higher. It’s a brand new PC so it’s very aggravating. The tek I’m following says to PC at 15psi for 90 minutes. How long do you think I should cook it for at 9psi?

I'd rather return it and get something that's sure to work. 90 min is already a commitment, imagine going longer and it not working. Having multiple attempts go bad because it's not sterilizing properly and then replacing it anyways. Up to you, but I wouldn't chance it.

I plan on exchanging it eventually (tomorrow perhaps) but I have some jars I was trying to get done tonight so I’m going to go ahead and try 90 minutes and give it an extra 60 minutes, does that sound reasonable?? The PC is faberware it says 7 in 1 programmable pressure cooker

That explains the problem. You need a pressure cooker that you heat on the stove. Get a 23qt presto

You want a pressure CANER not a pressure COOKER. Careful there. Yeah, and also you need one that you can use on a stove. That one would take AGES to sterlize things in. I don't remember the math but 9PSI will take something like 4 hours not just an extra 60 min. Think about how many jars you can fit in that thing too, you got a 6qt cooker, which is going to hold maybe... what 3 pints and still close? Maybe a half dozen 1/2 pints. Aim for the 23qt presto as recommended. Do yourself a solid

I use a presto 23q pressure cooker
Cooker, canner, autoclave, sterilizer. All will work. I just wouldn't use a digital pressure cooker tho

Cooker is the secondary function. Pressure canners can also be pressure cookers, but pressure cookers don't have to hold enough pressure to be able to safely can. Why not get a girl who can do both, go canner.
Presto's pressure cooker page doesn't even have this product: https://www.gopresto.com/product/category/pressure-cookers
EDIT: After my accident I learned way too much about these things

As long as it gets above 1psi its going to work. Farms sterilize in old 55 gallon drums with 1-2psi of pressure for 8+ hours.

Would a pressure cooker that's 6qt be able to even hold enough water to last for 8+ hours before running dry?

I sterilized the popcorn last night. I did 5 jars. Took several hours but I’m confident they are sterile. I will order a pressure canner for future use. I did a brf transfer to the popcorn today. Fingers crossed. I pulled off the brf to brf with no contam so I have high hopes. Y’all wish me luck tho!

Sort version: moved my PC while full and the gasket was "old" so it blew out and burst steam all over me. Fucking hurt. Check your gaskets!
