Work = Pay / But What Is Play?
    #25948707 -

Obviously we profit when we play. We profit in the decrease of boredom. But I don't feel comfortable with the statement that youngsters are working when they play.

I'll turn this around and say that people use work as a means to decrease boredom, the difference being that the decrease in boredom is an end result/ not immediate (except in the case of us workaholics).

'Work' would need a definition and even then, it's going to be subjective.

It's probably safe to assume that many people primarily work 'day jobs' to earn a living, which can potentially cause boredom.

The 'end result' is an economy.

A 'hobby job' is something else..

QFT

a job is almost always work, but work doesn't =/= a job.  Garden work is work, but it doesn't pay (unless you hire out and/or sell products from the garden) in financial terms [directly.]

i do intensive labor in forestry, and on good days it hardly seems like work at all, cause the benefit of "running around in the woods with a chainsaw and playing with fires" far outweighs the mental construct of WORK in relation to other tasks/jobs.

so like Duncan said, a definition is needed, otherwise it's all relative.

Anyway...We play before we learn to work at improving our game. Both are rewarding pastimes.

How is play rewarding? As an outlet for energy and exuberance...Then youngsters play more than tired, old people, but old people play cards; maybe less old people play cards when they have TV. So it still comes down to breaking monotony and boredom.

They are learning whilst they are playing.

'Working' just means functioning and everyone functions to some extent.

It is the 'job' which is the clincher.

If the job (the activity) is not attractive, the child won't play and won't learn, much like the adult who won't work and won't get paid, or the adult who will work with a grudge in a state of boredom.

Because lots of work in not creative, it is mechanical or repetitious, but there is little novelty and latitude to be creative. Thus it becomes little more than strife in the service of survival, the grind, the rat race, a Sisyphusian torment.

i've been there, but i feel it ultimately comes down to choice.  choose to have kids? you are likely going to sacrifice the ability to [comfortably] choose a career/job that provides satisfaction and "novelty"

choose to break laws that lead to years of repercussions down the road?  you are likely going to sacrifice the ability to [comfortably] choose a career/job that provides satisfaction and "novelty"

choose to gamble everything away?  you are likely going to sacrifice the ability to [comfortably] choose a career/job that provides satisfaction and "novelty"

choose to tie yourself down to a half-million dollar house?  you are likely going to sacrifice the ability to [comfortably] choose a career/job that provides satisfaction and "novelty"

choose to accept one's current state of being and not strive for/attempt change or betterment?  you are likely going to sacrifice the ability to [comfortably] choose a career/job that provides satisfaction and "novelty"

choices are made every moment of every day, and consequences follow.

I have the idea that there is no difference between work and play to the workaholic.

I'm saying that the context of work includes playing around with ideas, and that play is the initial stage of a workaholic.

Therefore everyone retains the expression of work/play whether they get paid in cash not.

Take honey for example; it's not a necessity. Neither are Nike running shoes. People like these things and are willing to reward the provider with something nice which for the sake of simplicity has been reduced to the form of cash.

Now in order to do something nice for someone in order to get what we like we have to have cash.

In other words if we have enough cash to reward people with we can have anything we like whenever we want it.

For the sake of simplicity we don't need the honey or the Nike running shoes.

Right, so in order to be nice to someone I support their choice of simplifying a process into the form of cash. If cash is not available that doesn't stop me from being nice to whomever I want, it just limits what people are willing to provide to me in the way of niceties.

In other words if I don't have the simplified version of niceness in the way of cash then they are no longer nice.

That's their prerogative. It's all ego anyway.

For me, the difference between work and play is a goal. Work involves an established goal while play has no goal or a focus on achieving a particular end result. Workaholics often have difficulty playing for this reason, that there are no goals. A workaholic prefers competition and achievement (even if it just means catching fish) over freestyle fun.

The point I'm trying to convey is that play evolves into goal orientation and is an end in itself. Goal orientated play will exist beyond the point when technological advances make wage earnings unnecessary for life-support.

terrible idea, the procedure leaves a dead tooth in the mouth which encourages bacterial growth, anaerobic bacteria cause a number of health issues not the least of which is heart disease

Quote:
Highly diverse microbiota in dental root canals in cases of apical periodontitis (data of illumina sequencing).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION:
Chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) is a frequent condition that has a considerable effect on a patient's quality of life. We aimed to reveal root canal microbial communities in antibiotic-naive patients by applying Illumina sequencing (Illumina Inc, San Diego, CA).

METHODS:
Samples were collected under strict aseptic conditions from 12 teeth (5 with primary CAP, 3 with secondary CAP, and 4 with a periapical abscess [PA]) and characterized by profiling the microbial community on the basis of the V6 hypervariable region of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene by using Illumina HiSeq2000 sequencing combinatorial sequence-tagged polymerase chain reaction products.

RESULTS:
Root canal specimens displayed highly polymicrobial communities in all 3 patient groups. One sample contained 5-8 (mean = 6.5) phyla of bacteria. The most numerous were Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, but Actinobacteria, Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria, Spirochaetes, Tenericutes, and Synergistetes were also present in most of the patients. One sample contained 30-70 different operational taxonomic units; the mean (± standard deviation) was lower in the primary CAP group (36 ± 4) than in the PA (45 ± 4) and secondary CAP (43 ± 13) groups (P < .05). The communities were individually different, but anaerobic bacteria predominated as the rule. Enterococcus faecalis was found only in patients with secondary CAP. One PA sample displayed a significantly high proportion (47%) of Proteobacteria, mainly at the expense of Janthinobacterium lividum.

You are seemingly hurt and angered in topics, though the display is not 'hilarious' by any means.

Personal issues can be discussed in other areas of the forum where you can entrust members.

This will serve you better than targeting topics and being impolite to members.

why yes, i do have moar, here you go...

Quote:
A journey through the thoughts of the first machine to briefly attain human consciousness. As the senses awaken the human condition comes into focus. The machine constantly rearranges its micromodules to improve understanding. It makes better processors and refines its sensors in search of the meaning of human life. All the thoughts and motivations, the loves and hates of mankind are scrutinized. The machine continues to develop its ability to be conscious moving beyond human comprehension. The machine becomes epiconscious. It learns the nature and purpose of the universe. It finds the meaning of life and the relationship of consciousness to the infinite creation. Having seen through the veil of existence by fully exploring infinity, the machine realizes it is not of any use and shuts down.

Sorry, this took a while for me to understand, but having clicked a similar image of a pile of stickers in the Google results in your link, sadly I seen this post at the bottom of the page and understood:

The hostility is all as expected, yet always thoroughly intriguing how a person who cries 'bully' is actually someone who acts like one themselves.

In light of these points which people are highlighting, he should pause for some serious thought.

Needless to say (to this person named 'killingravensun'), it isn't happening here young man.

Your posts, unfortunately are a testament to your level of intellect and maturity.

Announcing that you are 50 years old man whilst you act like a 16 year old who's angry at the world won't do you any justice neither.

Again, consider yourself, since it won't be accepted here.

Can everyone be rich?

I.e. utopia?

Buffett made the point, one car is enough.

(I guess he has two or so I had read.)

I.e., food satisfies -- we can all have what we wish i.e. utopia

(Of course some say no,

But is that anything other than a meme?

I didn't forget about you. I was thinking about you this morning while I was having sex. I guess Utopia is a place where one can have whatever one wants.

Can everyone have what they want? I think it's possible , but we may have to ditch the expedience of money.

I work in IT and I'm a computer nut. My work is often play and it pays well.

For the sake of an argument I could point out that you are at ease with the philosophy of 'work ethic' and that you arrived there thru argument, however subliminal that argument may have been it is still an argument. You were "riven" therefor away from your original state and captivated by another. You were captivated by the river (one who rives).
