Yeah... another firewall question :)
    #2594349 - 04/23/04 12:05 PM (14 years, 29 days ago)

Hey!!!
I'm looking for a NEW firewall.

I've been using ZoneAlarm but now I don't like it

I try to uninstall it, and for some reason it has dug itself so deep in my machine that it doesn't fully uninstall.

SO, now I'm in the market for another firewall...

Any suggestions?

Lana

Ditch the software 'firewall' and buy hardware. Even something cheap like a linksys websafe router is better than the software solutions.

http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=445 - you might have to register to view this page. The thread is called Firewall Guide, Firewall links/security info - scroll down to the list of software firewalls available. There's plenty of reviews and links and advantages/disadvantages.

I would pit my Iptables firewall against any sub $1000 harware firewall. Seriously there is a TON of great features in a linux firewall. While some of the linsys products are actually run on linux they don't use the greatest code. There are at least as many vunerabilites in a linsys as there are in a cheap closed source firewall product(aka zonealarm). I have heard good things about Black Ice. But if you need SERIOUS security, get an old computer and put 2 NIC's in it and run an iptables firewall/gateway on it. Other then that I donno, I use linux.

trust me hardware firewalls are best, and way more reliable. not expensive either. or else spend some money and build a cheap linux box and use it as a firewall. either is way more secure and reliable than a software firewall

I Kill my linsys router/firewall with anything over 40 connectionc. So basically i dislike their hardware firewalls. Get an industry quality firewall and then I will agree that harware firewalls rock. but not linksys or any competitor that I have tried yet.

Funny you say that... every software firewall has done that to my system. Whether its norton, zonealarm, blackice, or tiny personal firewall, they all like to install application protection giving prompts to run each program then slowly take control of your computer to where if you uninstall your computer becomes useless. D-Link routers have a nice firewall setup on them, though from personal experience they seem quite unreliable.

I'd say there are more vulnerabilities in anything software than there is in dedicated hardware. Go grab a PIX
