Second opinion : Suillus luteus aka. Slippery-Jack

Hey guys,

Walking through the local pine forest today, found a heap of Amanita Mascaria which is cool, and also I think a heap of Suillus luteus or Slippery Jack.

I have read the Slippery Jack are good eating, though before I fry these bad boys up, I was hoping to get a second opinion on my ID. While quite cool, the weather has been dry and the caps of these were not slippery and quite dry, though smell fresh and still feel firm.

Reminds me of Suillus brevipes with that shorter stipe, where are you located?

Hey thanks I'm in Canberra, Australia.. These were found in a local pine forest.

I don't see any signs that your boletes ever had a veil - so likely not S. luteus, but they definitely look like some other Suillus species. I'd agree with S. brevipes or maybe S. granulatus if you have either of them in your area - neither is native to Australia, but both have been spread around the world through pine plantations.

Understand that many mushroom species cannot be 100% reliably identified by photographs alone, even by an expert, so it may not be possible to go beyond suggesting a probable genus.

I just re-read this post, and they mention sometimes the remnants of the veil on the margin.

Suillus is as close as I can get, gilled mushrooms are more my thing.
