Picking up bags of millet from a bird store I always get asked what its for. Apparently I dont look like an avid bird watcher... a couple times ive just straight told them, "oh I grow mushrooms." Once the lady was like, "Oh I know you. You work at the Co-op downtown." I just laughed, said nope, and walked out without any further explanation. Honestly though im used to it, I look like a bum and dont seem to belong anywhere especially Jo-Ann's buying polyfill and flower drying crystals. So getting weird looks and questions is a constant to me. I just act really happy and engage with people even though I hate shopping and generally being in public. I feel the paranoia creeping in sometimes around the house, but if it ever becomes too much I'll just quit. Ive grown in a lot more sketchy places then I am in now. Having a house and a yard is so much better then some basement apartment and having to take spent subs/contaminated jars out to the dumpster under the cover of darkness.

I don't really get the paranoia in the community I mean, I'm not saying that you shouldn't be or anything, but I always assume people have no clue what the fuck anyone else is doing. Like, if I watched someone do what you're talking about I may internally think that in a kinda "that'd be neat!" way.
I live in a major city and do my mycology work in front of windows in the open. I assume no one knows what I'm doing even if they see me.

That's a good point, I do forget that we have some here who run deep. I run about 8-16 shoeboxes for actives and a couple dozen muda bottles for gourmets. The edibles are starting to take over since I can actually do something with most of those

J. Jack Flash said: primal soup, we have things in common. i can't smoke cannabis anymore, after being high for years, because all i get from it anymore is paranoia. galloping waves of paranoia. cannot deal. makes me sad, because i loved it before.
plans for building the undetectable grow space in my house. i also got over it. of course, i'm piling onto my space right now for a visit from an hvac contractor. would be nice to not need to do this.
and getting the creeps from normies who just have to know what i'm up to. i now run through a narrative in my head as i'm out shopping of what i'm using everything for. keeping that running makes for quick, credible responses when anyone asks questions. i know nothing about horses, "these oats? oh i'm experimenting with using them for home brewing. say, you know where i can find some barley feed?" "oh these tubs? my niece's science project. something about potatoes on mars, idk." "these jars? i use them for flower arrangements for friends and family. way cheaper than vases." sketchy fucker in the parking lot. find another place to shop.
one thing is certain. this hobby has made me a much better liar.
When I was last growing seriously I got to the point where I didn't feel any sort of paranoia which is where I want to go back to. It's nobody's business what I'm doing or why I'm buying what I'm buying. I just do what I do and never sell any product (but I do give it away).
I smoked weed for a long time but mushrooms, bless 'em, made me choose one day - it or them. I chose them and never looked back.
The sketchy fucker - I really thought he was a panhandler taking a cig break, you know, and thought he could get in my face. But maybe he really was on the phone and talking to somebody else entirely. Doesn't matter. I'm sure though he wasn't a messenger from God.
Anyway that was then this is now and I'm sorted again. I needed to discuss it somewhere with people who understood.

Sure it had to have a name of some sort.
I go away from cult a couple years and come back and shoeboxes are suddenly on point.
I think I'll just see how they do with my usual 3" of sub. PE always wants to lay down on the job anyway, lazy fucks.
Airflow's my only concern. In a regular tall mono you've got high and low which sets up a slight draft. I figure that becomes a few inches here. Maybe put low holes on one side and high on the other... At least they stack nice, I can get 16 in the dining room under the window without blocking anything. I like how cheap they are and they can go get stored in the attic off season.

Ahh nothing like someone pulling into the neighbors driveway causing the lights to blast through the windows while tripping balls in the dark causing ya to jump up and go into fight or flight mode.
I remember buying quart jars from the dollar store and the clerk is like, "little late for canning don't ya think?".
So I replied, "best storage containers since the 1800's.".
Most hair raising is when four of my wifes law enforcement relatives were up. Her sister saw my gourmet and medicinal mushroom book and started inquiring, "Oh you grow mushrooms?".
"Trying", I replied, "but all I've gotten was mold. Was hopeing on growing some reshi, enoki and hopefully portabellas some day but I don't think I have what it takes."
"Oh cool", everyone exclaimed, then I diverted the focus on how wonderful the Chaga mushroom is, ending the growing topic.
I leave no mycology books out anymore and honestly don't even mention the topic to outsiders. Particularly since that one family got raided for posting morel mushrooms on facebook last year.
That is probably my biggest paranoia; mention mushrooms, cultivation in the same sentence and everyone gets all sorts of crazy assumptions.

Quite frankly thomas Jefferson was right we as Americans have become pussies though he said if the government entity becomes too powerful it is up to the Americans to forma militia

Yeah Iv disowned our government, doesn’t matter republican, democratic, or other... I don’t want any part of that shit haha. It is fucked up how they get away with shit like that, I need to collect from someone but it’s not worth the jail time I would get if I went and took care of business. Good people get fucked over because we can’t take law into our own hand even if needed

Anytime I start growing, long before I have any harvest, I get the impression that total strangers know exactly what the fuck I'm doing - with those bags of grain, with those Sterlite containers, with those bales of coir, and so on. It drives me nuts.
I've had the same experience. I had an inspection by the city and it occurred to me later that I had some coir bricks, a big sack of vermiculite, a dehydrator, a couple empty mason jars all in plain sight. Next thing you know I'm plunging substrates down the toilet

Yeah. My garage - which isn't always closed and locked - likely contains probable cause for a search warrant. But you can't see it from the street.
Of course if I haven't got anything it's all totally innocent to me. Coir, peat, vermiculite, gypsum, tubs...who cares.
It occurred to me awhile back that you could use paint cans - you can buy them empty - to store dried shrooms in. Toss in a block of dry ice, let it evaporate, then knock the lid down tight. Label it "leftover green trim" "leftover bath trim" "leftover penis envy". Air tight and cracker dry they should keep forever. Blow some dust on the lids for best effect.

It's funny you mention the lowrider tubs. I have a couple of them and recently have been considering trying that out. If the mushrooms run out of space they'll probably just lift the lid.

I've sometimes ran out of headroom even in the tall FC, but some strains are leggy and others are compact. KSSS hobbits for instance. You could run 2 inches of headroom and never reach the lid...

If I were selling I'd feel concerned, but I don't even have any friends I'm so solitary so I'm not worried.
