Agar and Materials
    #2594131 - 04/23/04 10:38 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I've read through all of the stuff on this site and I'm going to give cloning a try here soon. I was wondering what everyone's preference was for a place to buy the petri dishes and the powdered agar, or if someone has any suggestions on what materials I should use the first time around or any tips. Any help is appreciated.

*Edit* I just checked out sporeworks selection of stuff, they have quite a collection of different mediums. What works best for cubes?

Sporeworks does infact have some awesome agar supplies. I don't know that cubes really have a preference, especially for a beginner. All of the agar Sporeworks sells should be just fine. Just make sure your not buying straight agar-agar. You need to get something with nutrients such as PDYA, MEA, etc.

I personally make my agar from raw agar bought at an Asian market and a low fat dog food. I have had tremendous success with this recipe. The recipe calls for:

1000 ml water
20 g Agar agar
20 g dog food

PC @ 15 lbs for 20 minutes

I know many more of us use homemade recipes as well. An agar mix can be used by boiling potatoes and adding the juice or even the whole mixture to agar. One can add corn syrup or bee pollen granules, the list goes on!

Good luck!

Joshua

i had a lot of success with antibiotic agar, i think you can get it from mycosupply...

my first time out with agar i lost everything to bacterial contams, something you almost never see using pf jars...

the antibiotic agar took care of that problem

I get mine from a local health food store. It is, among other things, used as a vegan replacement for gelatin.

Ive had to discover most things on my own. I rember when i first got into mycology i was a bit intimidated at where to get everyting but now everything seems so close at hand because there mostly in local stores.

I get my agar from the healthfood store along with malt, nutritional yeast, and rye berries. It's almost a one stop media shop...

I agree, Sporeworks has excellent prices if you don't want to mix up your own. If your a beginner, perhaps a pre-mixed batch would be best. You just add water and sterilize. And don't forget it would be better to weigh it out on the heavy side, as you don't want too little agar, and have it not fully solidify. There is enough in one of those jars to last awhile...
