Brf jars in dry climate
    #25941172 - 04/18/19 08:42 AM (5 years, 8 months ago)

I live in a desert and im worried my brf cakes dry before fully colonizing. I made them with 2parts verm, 1 part rice flower, 1 part water and punctured 4 holes in the lids with a nail. Would it be ideal to use slightly more water or use less holes?

I'm also in a desert region, my first pint jars I thought were too dry using the 2:1:1 mix (took 3 weeks to show growth), so my 2nd batch I added a bit of extra water, and they never colonized.

They look way too wet.

3rd batch I used half pint jars with 2:1:1 again and got some colonization starting at day 6. I think the difference from my first run is that I used a pressure cooker for this one.

I don't think they will dry out before they colonize.  However I did only use 2 holes on the half pint jars.  But I don't think it will make all that much of a difference.  The 'too-wet' jars still haven't dried out nearly a month later.

I think (not certain) that if you think it will dry out you can just micropore tape some (or all?) of the holes in the lid.

During colonization the ambient air in a room doesn't really matter. The jars won't lose enough moisture through the lids to dry out in the time it takes to colonize.

After doing the 2:1:1 ratio you're supposed to check for field capacity and adjust. Not everyone's rice flour and verm are the same

They are all growing just pretty slowly. I marked them with a marker yesterday and havr shown growth. It took 4 days to see colonization and they are probably 60% colonized. I inoculated them about a month ago
