Cooked coir or just keep it simple?
    #25941007 - 04/18/19 05:58 AM (5 years, 8 months ago)

On my last 6 shoeboxes I decided to not used cooked coir. I used hot water to break the coir up & let it cool down before spawning. I've got some more jars getting ready to be spawned by the end of this week. My last one performed okay. I did ms>grain.. so you can see why results weren't favorable.

Anyway, while those colonized I got into agar.. I grew some nice clones and cleaned up another culture and dropped the wedges to grain. So I'm more than sure these will perform optimal compared to that Ms shoot.

I'm just wondering, how many of you actually pastierize your coir?(Bucket tek). I really am a simple ass person? And if it really doesnt make all the different I much rather just keep it simple.

Just wondering if you guys have had better results or were less prone to contams using pasteurized coir other than just coir straight out the block.

Any input or experiences of your own on this would be highly appreciated.

Hopefully everyone is.
Some coir comes packed with trich for plants, pasteurizing or sterilization helps eliminate that.

Edit:I think I remember Pasty saying something like, these steps help break the coir down making it easier for the mush to colonize as well, I think he was talking more focused on the sterilizing of coir mix.

Bod makes it very clear that you should cook your coir.

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t do it the way the experts recommend? It really isn’t any more work then what you are already doing. You say you are a simple ass person, but placing coir in a cooler and dumping boiling water in is pretty freaking simple.

Putting all the time into prepping your grains, and cleaning up your spores on agar then deciding to just half ass the simplest part seems silly to me, but I’m too new to be successful without following proven teks so your way could work fine.
