Dried Shrooms blue/black
    #25940164 -

I have dried the shrooms for about 13 hours with fan (fresh air). They are not cracker dry but already pretty dried.

Weight:
fresh - 48,65 g
dried - 11,33 g

I've looked a lot through other posts trying to find similar shrooms to mine but I can't find anything with such intense blue/close to black colours. What do you guys think? safe to eat?
Golden mushrooms, probably some of them aborts.

Picture of them before harvest and after drying:

Just the psilocybin being oxidized by the heat and oxygen, still potent, still active...

I find they bruise up like that when dried with a lack of heat. Like using a fan and if taking days to dry them. While there's still moisture inside cells degradation happens and enzymes function. Hest denatures enzymes, dehydrators ain't hot enough to hurt potency even at 170F. (We boil shrooms at 212f to make tea, deep fry cubes at 350-400F to make psychedelic mushroom appetizers)

Really? I find they black up when heat is used. When i air/fan dry they come out all nice without many bruises at all.

Weird, dehydrators make them the prettiest imo

I have to agree with bod on this one. Mine always look good coming out of the dehydrator  unless I was really rough pulling them

That pre harvest picture shows how fuzzy they were, especially on the caps.
I find that 'fuzzy feet' and any aerial myc tends to bruise a lot more. Maybe due to more surface area leading to more oxidation?

Yeah I haven't had many turn blue on me in the dehydrator unless I stuff the fuck out of it and they get smooshed... but people always think blue is a potency indicator so I guess its a good thing they went that color right ??

I smoosh em all, still little blue. I don't rough em up by hand tho.

I've got a dehydrator function built into my oven (low heat, lots of air), and I've found temperature is a huge determinant. Setting it around 120 results in attractive, golden dried fruits, but setting it around 150 or higher leads to much darker (almost black) fruits.

My guess is that the higher temperatures cook them a bit as they're dehydrating, the same way that white button mushrooms turn gray when cooked. I'm guessing different dehydrators have different ratios of air to heat, which is why individuals' results vary, but my takeaway is that you want to get them dried quickly but with minimal heat - too much time OR heat will cause cellular breakdown, so the sweet spot is somewhere in between.

:whathesaid:

Heavy darkening sometimes happens to my mush that are over saturated and stacked full in the dehydrator.
But most the time they come out lovely with little blueing.

OP looks like the psilocybin is breaking down cause of lack of proper drying.

If the batch went from 44g to 11g it probably didn't dry all the way

That's why I speculated about ratios of air to heat. I'm guessing a purpose-built dehydrator has better air circulation than an oven with a dehydrator feature, so maybe higher temps are fine with more air because they dry quicker? Just a guess - all I can speak to is my experience, where 160 blackened the fruits. FWIW, I've had better results when partially air drying with a fan without heat before putting in the oven dehydrator, which is why I'm guessing that higher heat + wet fruits = cooking before drying.

I'm sure there's someone on here with a chemistry background (or even a culinary one) who can clear this up. I'm just sharing ideas in the hope that we can collectively learn something new here.

I’m betting your oven doesn’t work as well as a real dehydrator, does your oven have plenty of air flow?

I had the dehydrator shut off mid way through drying and they did that.  It’s really not ideal, but people were all like “woah, look at how blue they are they must be so strong”. And I was like umm, sure dude.
