Joining an Islamic forum * 3

I have joined a couple in order to observe and talk about how Muslims feel about certain issues in America/Europe.

Such issues as gay rights, women's rights, Christianity, apostates, Sharia law, missionary work, jihad, and so forth.

Many people think Islam is very compatible with Western values. Is it?

I am going to find out.

I can't tell.

If I say the wrong things, these mates might come after me.

From what I understand, even drawing Muhammed can warrant death or severe punishment according to the Hadith, select phrases from Muhammed.

I'm not arguing with them in there. I am just asking questions and being neutral.

I dont think fundamental Islam, which strictly goes by the book, is compatible with Western values. That being said, many Muslims are not fundamentalists and do not go strictly by the book, in the same way many modern Christians ignore certain passages of the Bible (such as sex before marriage, anti-gay, etc).

One thing you should keep in mind when reading that forum is that the type of Muslim who is willing to take time out of their day and discuss Islam on an internet forum is going to be on the more religious and strict side, most likely, as opposed to the Americanized liberal Muslim teen who cares more about getting into a relationship and passing their classes, and whose main connection to islam at this point is simply believing in god and some basic ethical principles. aka it might not be the most balanced sample

what forum is this anyways? id be interested in looking at it

I'll make sure to get the opinions of Muslims who live in the western world, as many muslims on these forums do. I will also get the opinions of non-western Muslims.

With that said, it will be balanced.

I won't share the several forum names until my work is done.

Maybe it would be worth going to a christian forum and seeing how their values pan out with western ones. Fundamentalist christians are almost indiscernible from fundamentalist muslims.

I think that's a very constructive thing for you to do, Xul. Incidentally, there are well over 3 million people in the U.S. who identify as practicing Muslims, so I sense a compatibility with the West. Of course, these are usually well educated people, for what that's worth.

Dealing with religious folk is beating a dead horse. I grew up Southern Baptist. When my brother got baptized at age 10...I at age 8 accused him of selling out for attention. The religion is not important...they are all the same. They want to be to be told what to do by authority because they have no concept of free will. They also are not inclined to change their mind....hate and separation are their currency.

You probably mean that the people you have encountered have been that way.

Others, will perhaps take into regard each specific religion and each person subjectively, lest they would be standing as people themselves promoting separation and hate through closed-mindedness and blanket statements...

nope, religions are by definition xenophobic, they pronounce a class of human to be more godlike than all other classes, religion is the cornerstone of racism, religious people are by default racists, irrefutable truth
