Humidity and heat
    #2593869 - 04/23/04 06:51 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

OK,Where to start?
First,I live in florida where the temps are about 70-85'f(give or take)right now and the humidity varies at 70-100%(no rain=70% and it rises during the night to 100%)
My first batch of jars colonized very fast and all went well, right?nope!
I made 4 casings and I have a major problem!HEAT!!
I have 2, 3 tier greenhouses(only using one right now)and it works quite well, except that it gets way too hot in there! The casings are putting off alot of heat.I dont have a cool mist humidifier(I have to get one, but,I am financialy embarrassed at this time).
Everything was going great,2 of them pinned pretty good, but, then I noticed that the pins stopped growing and the caps opened on them(only 1 inch high)and I thought it was something I did(spraying h20/h2o2 on them=no,no,)then all of a sudden they aborted and completely stopped growing. So,I thought that I could rinse them and remove what solution was sprayed on them buy washing all of the casing layer off and redoing it.The sides of the casings were shrinking too.So I did rinse them and when I did,I noticed that there were pins inside of the casings(growing inside).I thought that was due to the crumbling of brf cakes and useing them as spawn.Anyway, when I rinsed them I didnt see any hyphal knots on the surface(very, very, few if any).I thought about scratching the surface, but,I didnt want to remove anything that I might not see(pins or knots)so I didnt.I re-applied the casing layer with a mix of 50/50 coir, verm and put them back in the greenhouse. The temperature sky rocketed to 95'f!I tried everything-put ice in the bottom, left it open, fanned like a hurricaine, and misted when needed, but it still is way too hot for them to pin.I put them in the fridge for a 24 hour dunk, and they showed a little growth but the heat has stopped them again.
Is there any damn thing I can do besides going out and spending 20-40 dollars on a cool mist humidifier?
I think I have lost these 4 casings!F**K!!
Can I just set them on a shelf, out of sunlight, and mist them when they need it?I cant keep them in the GH,but I am going to lose them(if I havent already)and I cant get a humidifier at this time and I can only make 3 trays of ice every 24 hours(and it doesnt work too well).
Hell maybe I should just take them outside and make a bed.
Its too early this morning so I know this sounds stupid but its a real prob .
Any advise would help.

:crying: :mushroom2:

heat is a bitch here in AL too. during the peak of summer i switch to a smaller terrarium its just big enough for 6 cakes or 2 bread pan caseings and a frozen 20oz coke bottle, it helps a little with the heat but not a lot.
is the GH set-up big? i assume it is mabey you could try a couple of frozen 2-liter bottles. hope this helps.

Yes, those things do heat up.
if any sunlight hits mine, the temp goes through the roof.
Try leaving the zips undone, or if that fails, in your heat, i would try shelves and misting, as you mentioned. Maybe replace the plactic outer
with cotton sheets? just to add keeping out air born contams.

That sounds like it may help MESCALATO.I'll give it a whirl and see.Yes,the GH is pretty good size and there is plenty of room. The ice I was useing -I would put it in a rubbermaid container that I have in the bottom w/water in it for air exchange and it would melt almost immediately, but I never thought to freeze bottles.(like I said its too early here, lol).
I also put some plant cuttings in there for co2 control-would this cause the heat to rise also?

Thanks man!

I have the GH in a corner away from the sunlight and I'm using a 40 watt cool white flouro for light and my house is at 74'f and the inside of the GH is 89'f right now.I tried to leave it unzipped but it seems to dry them out too fast.
By tonight the GH will raise from 89-almost 100'f-I am constantly checking on it and opening and fanning and misting(when needed)but after about 10-15 minutes, closed up,the temp shoots up fast.

will the Rmaid tub you were putting the ice in fit in the freezer if so you could just have a giant ice block. never used plants for co2 control so im not sure if they generate heat or not. i've often wondered how a venus fly trap would do in a ter.

Yeah,I cant get the tub in my freezer(wish I could, that would solve it for sure)but I can get 2 litre bottles in there.

LOKI,you said to replace the cover with cotton sheets?Would that not soak up my humidity?I know they dont need much but it sounds like cotton would absorb alot of moisture.I dont know though-never tried it.

Thanks

Well, your natural humderty is pretty high as is,
I dont think cotton will change that much, maybe
canvas is a better bet, you can always spray it, but
the plastic is what is keeping the temp high.
