Why most people don't get hooked on alcohol? * 2
    #25936785 -

I've seen people who have wine, vodka, beer, whiskey in their house, but they barely ever touch them.

How is this possible? Do they feel less euphoria from it?

I could never have alcohol in my house, I can't stop until it's gone

It doesn't matter how hard i try, if I have it in my house it's like an itch I keep thinking about it all day until I give in.

They have self control and you are a compulsive drinker. Having a liquor cabinet that you can offer your friends a drink from is a sign you are an adult now.

I can hold on to any substance for a rainy day, I have had a gram of MDMA for like 7 years.

I've never been into alcohol. I don't really enjoy the feeling of being drunk... so booze sits around my house forever.  Not sure if it's a coincidence, but my father was  huge alcoholic & I saw first hand what the addiction did to him.

Chronic when it comes to the cannabis though.

You guys clearly don't understand how addiction works.

When you're an addict, you're not in control, your subconscious is in control and it is more powerful than anything you can imagine, it's like a powerful primitive beast you have to tame, logic and reason won't do a thing in helping you.

It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, intelligent or stupid, anyone can be affected by it.

This is a psychedelic community, you guys should know better, apperently psychedelics didn't teach you about compassion and empathy.

I think this is a really good observation. People that have never had a true addiction can't relate. It's something so foreign to them. I wouldn't expect them to understand.

And I also believe it's unfortunately sculpted into one's DNA. It's hereditary.
Of course there are many people who carry a gene that makes them more susceptible to addiction, yet never succumb to it.
That's because they never had the initial will to drink or do any drugs heavily.

But for us of those that do, we're fucked. And yet, addicts/ex-addicts are the people I enjoy being around most. It's who I can relate to most in their concepts of thinking and ways of looking at the world.
It's something pretty profound I think.

Nowadays having been clean for a long fucking time, this still all holds very true to me.

Didn't really see where people weren't empathetic, you asked and some people answered truthfully. I'm like you. If there's alcohol in the house,I'm probably going to drink most of it and finish it the next night. Some people have addictive personalities, some don't.

People are able to not drink because they dont feel the need to drink.

OP I don't know where you get the idea that most people don't have a problem with alcohol. At minimum 10% of the global population is alcoholic. That is a statistical number that comes from Alcoholics Anonymous. There are a lot of people who are not alcoholics but are heavy-hitters and border on alcoholism so that 10% could be a lot higher. Some people say it's a progressive disease so I guess it might depend on where a persons at within that progression.

As true as that is as far as the statistics, alcoholism as defined by AA and similar drug/alcohol programs by a lot broader margin than most people see it.

For example, they categorize people who binge drink as alcoholics. And that's the majority of that 10% minimum you referred to.

Not that it takes away merit from that statistic as binge drinking will without a doubt lead to true dependency and eventual addiction in a lot, but not all. Maybe not even most.

If I binge drink one night, I will want to continue drinking until I can't anymore. Therefore, I'm an alcoholic. And although I have more control over it nowadays after years of not drinking, I'm back to square one in a matter of a few days if I were to slip up.

Most of my friends, when they binge drink, the last thing they want to do is drink again the next day. It doesn't seem to even be a thought in their minds. They are not alcoholics, but are defined by AA as such.

I would definitely categorize myself as an alcoholic, and I can only drink like 1 night a week. I'll have a bottle of liquor sit on my fridge for an entire month before its gone. There are many levels to alcoholism, and as mentioned, many people will fall into one of these levels.

Drinking alcohol for Euphoria for me is very similar to cocaine both of which I don't care for a whole lot, make me feel like I have ingested poison and the end result it's just not worth it. Six beers is Max for me or I would pay.

Everybody's body chemistry is different - I can be compulsive with pot, other people have other issues sex, gambling, opiates, cigaretts, anger, drama, blah blah blah.  Some might say if you spend a few hours a day on a drug site learning how to make and take drugs you might have a problem. It's all relative OP is tryna be honest, I can't stand the insensitive tone from a few - what's your Vice man?  Care to share?

Now thats not to say everyone who has a problem is going to be a fuck up.
Theres lots of people addicted to hard drugs that still hold down decent jobs and shit..
IMO alcohol is a hard drug in the same class as crack and heroin.

there are many reasons, and im pretty sure this is one. i find alcohol to be one of the most lackluster and boring drugs out there. it seems to me that i am not getting the same effects from it that others do. i believe there have been studies on the exact mechanism behind this feature, but yeah, people have different nervous systems

It's unfair to compare crack to heroin in any way as far as the damage they do.
Opiates are relatively easy on your body.
crack or coke (doesn't really matter) of course cause stress to your nervous system by speeding it up so much. I find it to be a way harder drug than H, but that may be due to my body chemistry and sensitivity to stims.

Alcohol I believe to be the worst poison of all potentially addictive drugs, including all the schedule 1's. As far as actual damage to your internal organs, yea, alcohol is the bitch that'll kill you first.

I say all this with the idea that you're not OD'ing on any of these drugs. Just indulging in them for an extended period of time.

I understand what you're trying to point out in your comment, and I agree. But wanted to clear things up a bit. And I don't mean to dismiss what you said about you having your vices. But were they just that? Vices? Or an actual addiction because there is a world of difference if so.

To add to one of your points, the 4 and a half years I was on opiates every single day, I was the most successful I've been in my life to this day as far as work/career is concerned. Even the relationship I was in at the time was amazing (she didn't do anything but smoke weed, and didn't know I was ever on oxy). It was a fake world though.

What I meant was both of them make people ruin there lives, and so does alcohol. thats where that comment came from that they should all be in the same class.
Notice how I said "makes people ruin there lives" its not the drug fault, its peoples actions while they are on said drugs.

Its hard to say, about the addiction.. where is the line drawn between vices and addictions?
I was around lots of drugs for many years and honestly never thought I was going to be able to live a normal life without them.
I've had my runs with most street drugs, expect for crack, heroin and meth and PCP... but I've done lots cocaine, lots of different opiates, and lots of speed (Adderall, Ritalin, speedy Molly, ect.)

Your right, I've never had an over dose on any drugs besides alcohol.

I'm the person who needs to dust off his opened liqor bottles regularly, and its always the same bottles.

I drink mostly when Divinity asks me to take one medicinally, such as a nightcap after a hectic day.

Alcohol is a spirit and its call is less seductive to me than the call of sobriety.

Quote:
Alcohol distillation likely originated in India. During 2000 BCE, people of India used an alcoholic drink called Sura.[3] Alcohol distillation was known to Islamic chemists as early as the eighth century.[4][5]

The Arab chemist, al-Kindi, unambiguously described the distillation of wine in a treatise titled as "The Book of the chemistry of Perfume and Distillations".[6][7][8]

The Persian physician, alchemist, polymath and philosopher Rhazes (854 CE – 925 CE)[9] is credited with the discovery of ethanol.[10][11]

the proverbial hollow leg and the will to continue drinking outside of social settings is generally enough to get people into an insidious habit without realizing it is a problem until it serious.

you know you are past the fun and games part when you are drinking to nurse hangovers or enjoy heavy extended binges.

my favorite drunk feeling was the second day of drinking for sure, just wake up half in the bottle and just going with it. happy those days are behind me, better to view it with a nostalgic lens rather than suffering through all that again.

For me, the hangover is enough to keep from being addicted. Coming down off alcohol sucks and making a choice between drinking more or calling it quits is a pretty easy desicion.

I am sort of a binge drinker with beer since the come down is a lot smoother, but still, that shitty feeling when u run out of alcohol is not good.

The toxicity and carcinogenicity of acetaldehyde in those who drink alcohol is relevant.

I'm not out to give alcohol a bad name, I'm looking at it from the side of chemistry.  Every sip of alcohol you drink produces acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is a reactive aldehyde that messess with all sorts of functiuonal groups, and because of that disrupts all sorts of organic tissues. It is an irritant substance that can alkylate, crosslink and form ethers, thioethers, amines and amides and radicals.

Every sip of alcohol you take puts acetaldehyde in your entire system that does tissue damage from your skin to your blood to your bone marrow.  Most tissues in the human body are highgly regenerative, but others arent.  "Every glass kills brain cells" is very true.

Alcohol puts strain on all your tissues and some don't or barely regenerate, leading to cumulative damage caused by every drop of alcohol drank over a lifetime.

It doesnt do that because of its barbiturate like effect (GABA A Agonist) and it doesnt do that because of its Nitrous oxide like effect (NMDA Antagonism)  it does so because it is broken down to a toxic, carcinogenic metabolite by the liver, which too is damaged in the process.

We all get carcinogens in our everyday activities, but people who drink regularly are running GALLONS of toxic carcinogenic acetaldehyde through their system every year. Not milligrams of carcinogens, GALLONS.

One of the strongest predictors of alcoholism is a person's natural tolerance to alcohol. Sometimes I feel like getting a buzz on and have like 4 beers max, but the next day I end up feeling like shit. Because of that I associate alcohol with the bad feelings and sickness the next day. Hard liquor? That sounds terrible to me. Now weed I can just smoke as much as I want and I'll maybe feel a little groggy the next morning but it doesn't bother me.

People who can drink a lot do drink a lot.

True this. Half my family has alcohol issues.

My brother has an alcohol issue.

I am spared only because of my revulsion.

If you have blood relatives with alcohol issues, if you are honest about it, you are at increased risk. Dried tofu grating vegans with straight edge families are at decreased risk.

Genetics play a part and remembers that many addiction issue professionals consider alcoholism "the most tragic of drug addictions" because the body and mind are destroyed simultaneously and so many are directly affected.

Science can't truthfully claim any drug "causes addiction" any more than casinos cause gambling addiction. Notice that most people who ingest opioids don't fall in love and become "hooked".

"Addiction" is often defined as a progressive lifetime illness that can never be defeated and requires special treatment and programs, but so many people have defeated their drunken habits, should we abandon the assumption being a drunkard is a lifetime disease?

We're now taught by "experts" being a drunkard is not a personal decision (nor a moral failing), so the vodka floodgates are open, and until we deal with drinking and drugging and other behaviors as choices, we're screwed.

That's so true, alcohol euphoria only lasts 30 minutes followed by tiredness and sadness.

Maybe that's why it's so addictive, it's very short acting, you never feel satisfied.

I don't consume drugs just to "feel euphoric" or just because I have them on hand/available...I consume drugs for very specific uses and very specific occasions....I can have drugs sitting around for a long time until that specific use or that specific occasion arises.

About alcohol specifically....Sure being buzzed on alcohol can be a little euphoric, but I feel it's a rather lame and boring/dull drug and I don't ever have any interest in drinking when I'm at home or when I'm not with friends/in a social setting....I might have an occasional beer with dinner, a 6 pack will last weeks for me if I just have em' with dinner sometimes, but drinking to catch a buzz isn't something I do unless I have a reason/occasion to do so. Alcohol isn't interesting enough for me to just drink while I'm not in a social setting.

I honestly never have any cravings or urges for any drugs  . Sometimes a certain drug might sound nice to do, but it's not any sort of strong craving or urge to do it.

It doesn't matter how hard i try, if I have it in my house it's like an itch I keep thinking about it all day until I give in.

It's very easy not getting hooked when you have a good life, I wonder if you would be able to keep this level of self control if something really bad happened to you, something that makes you feel hopeless and depressed and you have that drug right next to you that can make you feel really happy for a couple hours more happy than you could ever feel naturally.

I get the point about pot should be legal everywhere but holy shit you sound like a girl who had two wine coolers and starts sobbing about the troubles in her life.  A half hour, really?

I go weeks happily drunk.  People smoke weed where I live.  They don't care, good for them.

I’m a recovering alcoholic and regular AA member. I don’t think either AA nor science has alcoholism figured out yet. If it’s genetic they haven’t isolated a gene.

This is a simple and maybe overly obvious point but I think if you have a psychological problem (perhaps even too small to be classified as a disorder) if it’s a problem that you don’t like and alcohol successfully masks that problem (perhaps anxiety or depression) you’ll be more prone to drink alcohol in unhealthy quantities.

I frequently make the point that if you’re drinking is problematic you can eliminate that problem simply by not drinking. That doesn’t get you to the root of the cause but it is undeniably that simple (and that hard)

I'm an alcoholic and that has been my only substance problem.  It is the least healthy habit I ever took up.  I can fight the desire to drink if I have a fridge full of beer or liquor if I really want, but that is rarely what I want and it's a challenge.  I don't have much advice beyond to avoid drinking all day every day for any length of time if you recognize you have a problem with it, really hard to get back to healthier habits once you do.

Addiction is a weird thing. Some people cant stop smoking weed or smoking cigs or shooting heroin. Others are hooked on alcohol and love to drink everyday. Ive been addicted to nitrous before. Theres an addiction out there for all of us, and its up to us to either avoid it or learn self-control.

I don't really have "the good life"...I mean relatively speaking, sure, I have a roof over my head and clean water to drink and food in my stomach which a lot of folks in this world do not. So I have a "good life" compared to a lot of folks on this planet considering I have shelter, food, and clean water to drink.....

....but I really don't have much and my life has been incredibly hectic/stressful and depressing with a lot of anxiety over the past 2 years (and in general my life hasn't been glorious)...I have been going through one of the lowest and most difficult patches in my 33 years of life over the past couple years (long story).

I still do not have any issue with "self control" .

Just because I'm feeling super depressed and hopeless and anxious and lonely, which I certainly have been over the past two years pretty much every single day, more so than any other point in my life so far......just because I'm feeling that way and because I have drugs on hand does not make me want to take those drugs so I can artificially feel "happy" for a few hours.

I'm even less interested in taking drugs when I'm feeling down/depressed & stressed out because if I start to feel "high" and "good" it's nothing but an artificial feeling and not genuine...and then after a few hours I'm back to "reality". It does not fix anything and doesn't make the "feels" go away.

I like to take drugs to enhance & celebrate things/occasions...not to drown out or artificially cover up my sorrow & lowly feelings.

With that said...I do smoke small amounts of herb in the evening/night and take about 2 grams of kratom a day...But both of those I'm using for medicinal reasons and not just to purely catch a buzz/get high on, I take the same amounts at the same time every day and do not increase my dosage to try to catch a high/euphoric feels. I've been taking the same amount of cannabis and kratom for many many years now, I take what works for me and I leave it at that.

And this isn't to say I don't ever "party", or that I don't ever get really loaded or never get super spun lol....because I do lol, but it's for specific/special occasions and not because I'm feeling depressed/stressed/anxious.

Alcohol I can take or leave more than weed, although there are a lot of alcoholics on both side of my family. I'll drink it if I have it around, but I'll go weeks or months without it and not really miss it too much. And I only really drink to excess a handful of times a year when partying with people I don't see often. With weed I have a lot less self control. Haven't gone more than a couple days without smoking it since legalization. It used to be more of a hassle to buy it for me.

It’s a myth that you have to hit rock bottom. You can take action and fix the problem before you bottom out. In a sense, every recovering alcoholic does this because the only real rock bottom is death.

I’ll tell you one thing about alcoholic drinking: Wherever you’re at, it gets worse.

Come to think about it I can't remember a week where I haven't drunk to excess on a Wednesday or Saturday for a few years. I usually wake up full of regret and waste the following day, maybe I do have a problem

We have so much alcohol in our house, it astonishes nearly everyone who comes over. You would die via cirrhosis of the liver before you could make a dent in it. I poured out a few gallons of various hard alcohols not too long ago.

My body only allows for 2-3 drinks a day at this point. Think the liver wants more of a marathon than a sprint. Don’t kill your organs just because booze is in front of you, it is so easy to get, make, etc... don’t feel like you need to drink it all in one sitting. Settle down lol.

I totally concur :yesnod: . I too feel stuff that like that is purely enabling babble.

Everything is in the person's control...it's entirely the person's choices and decisions at play...Addiction is the result of a person's choices, simple as that. These things aren't jumping down a person's throat on their own, the person has to make the choice to consume it or not.

nah, i get it.  i'm an addict.  but i don't use that as an excuse for myself or for others.  i know i have an opiate problem and that i can't live a productive, healthy, ultimately-satisfying lifestyle if i choose to use.

i smoke cannabis like a chimney from the moment i wake up till i go to bed, but i can also quit anytime (i'm on "vacation" now, far away from my home, and haven't smoked in near two weeks; each summer i'm where i am now and won't smoke cannabis for 8-14 weeks until i return home)

i have a couple shots of whiskey most nites after work (physical labor), but not always, and i don't have to.  it's a choice.  the bottle can sit for weeks untouched, or i can kill a bottle in 2-3 weeks.

the running theme here is that it is a voluntary choice i make, and i recognize that.  just like NOT using opiates is a choice i made long ago when i realized i had a problem.  i can smoke and drink and maintain a remotely healthy lifestyle.  solid sleep, solid diet.  if my drinking ever interfered with my ability to function, i'd stop.

i much prefer running a chainsaw stoned, but it's not an essential and i can and do work somedays without smoking, even if i have two joints rolled for the day and the bowl/bud in my day-pack next to my wedges and tools.

Replace the alcohol with weed and smoke until you get too high to leave your apartment. Or on nice days smoke in public with sunglasses on and get too paranoid to go into stores and then go home and watch documentaries and find new music online. Save the alcohol for Friday or Saturday nights, only drink the one night a week. Eat a solid meal before you drink, and drink water throughout the night in addition to alcohol. You can get shitfaced and stay pretty level. Then wait until next week to drink again. And take Uber or Lyft. And then you don't have to worry about anything.

haha i appreciate the logic but most of my drinking is done by myself at home. Sometimes i'll uber/lyft and venture out, but for the most part being at home makes me wanna drink more. I definitely need more gym time, hikes, time outside with nature and shit.

I have a problem.

I quit drinking for a few months and recently started again.
Ive been drinking myself into oblivion every night.

Yesterday, about 4 pm, i downed a pint of vodka in like 5 minutes, drove to the store, and bought a 12 pack of miller ultra :puke:

Drank about 4 on the 5 minute drive home, and the vodka had just started kicking in.

I woke up in my shed outside which is full of fucking spiders with a nasty bite on my arm

apparently, i drank all of the beers as they were all gone.

also, at some point post blackout, i drove to the store and bought a pack of marlbro lights, and smoked one of them backwards, because there were 2 half smoked cigs on the ground, one lit from the wrong end, no idea where the rest of the pack even went.

I felt brain damaged this morning. Time to quit...

Honestly I'm more surprised how many people DO get hooked on alcohol, shit there are so many drugs out there that are better that don't leave you feeling like someone smashed your brain with a hammer the next day if you drank too much. Nothing wrong with a little buzz of course.

But then I remember it's everywhere and you can buy it at just about any store and it's legal and pretty much the only intoxicant that's publicly endorsed.

If I want to kick back and relax I'd rather have some kratom tea and some weed than drink

Dude, that shit isn't sustainable, one way or another itll bite you in the ass.

I've got another 4 months (of 18) until I can get my license back and the time I got caught was by no means the first time I did it.

What I always found was whenever i stopped and started up again was my binging would be like 5 times worse than it was before. Like i had missed out on 3 or 4 weeks of drinking and had some catching up to do.

Quite often I'd buy my drink, come home and fire it in to me and when I woke up thered be an extra two empty bottles of wine or something that I didn't originally buy. So at some point I'd decided to go back to the shop and get more but have absolutely no recollection of it. I wouldn't know if I drove or walked (most likely drove though) or what the fuck happened going there or coming back.

After that  to ensure I had enough for the evening I was just getting a 70cl of vodka, that would pretty much last me till I woke up and what ever was left I'd finish off in the morning.

The truth is..most people who drink are in denial and they dont know they have a problem. They just keep drinking to keep from feeling like cral but dont think theyre addicted because they are not black out drinking.

I challenged so many old friends to stop drinking for 2 weeks and they all said they could..but they refuse to try it because they are convinced they are not addicted.

Alcoholism causes more denial than anything

YES, you are in control.  get out of here with that nonsense.  saying someone is not in control is just more enabling babble.

Quote:
your subconscious is in control

the subconscious is always there, it's up to the individual to exercise their mind and be aware of their thoughts and actions.  the brain can be wired and rewired over and again.

addiction comes down to what someone TRULY wants/desires for themselves.  if they would rather get high/drunk than not, then that is the course of action.  what someone says does not matter, it's their actions that matter.

/end of story

Think about leaving someone you really love, you can never see her again, like your mother for example, you can not see her in 1 year 10 years or 50 years, she's gone forever.

That's how hard it is to quit a drug you're very addicted to. I'm not saying it is impossible it's just extremely difficult, most heavy addicts need external help like psychological therapy and support.

Of course different people have different levels of addiction. The level of how addicted someone is to something depends on how bad  his life is without it.
Even if you have a good life, the more you use it the more your mood and health deteriorates, the more it deteriorates, the more hooked you become.

It has been your friend helping you emotionally through tough times, allowing you to appreciate life more and making things more fun, now you have to leave it and never look back.
This kind of psychological reward creates an intense bond between the user and the drug.

Some people might be able to quit it on their own, but it's necessary intense psychological work or maybe a very traumatic ayahuasca trip.

Does one ever get to the point where one doesn't believe in coincidences anymore.  Esoterics, such a variety!  Any one actually learns things and has fun most times.  I am ok with that.

Love beer though, I do prepare for a deep experience though as I can give it up and do at times.  Get more out of it.  Tried to talk to my brother and his girlfriend on lsd when they were both drunk and it was like trying to break through a concrete barrier for them to have any understanding of my ideas and esoteric state.

Esoteric states aren't bad on alcohol, a different animal though.  Have learned even when shaking and seeing horrid hallucinations on fear that it is just the body projecting it's fears in ones mind and one sees it but is so distorted to reality.  If that makes any sense.

I have always been fit.  I walk everywhere.  I just find it is easier to process emotions and see what is real and what is fear, false evidence appearing real as the saying goes, more.

Yeah, Time for Summer.:wonka:  Observe without judgement and I am heavily judged but not by people that matter in life.  Took me a long time to realize that.

I am on Klonopin and my beer is running out.  Have to make a beer run.  I hate where I live and the laws.  I feel fucking lazy as hell.

The people that take pills to not drink have some will power.  I train before thru hikes on 15 miles a day and prepare for it.

I hate the judgement and condemnation of people that do that to me when I am fit, eat well, and my blood pressure is top notch.  Fuck off.  Let people be.  I have seen alcoholics, when I get called called one it just makes me laugh at the ignorance.

Don't want to leave the music at dusk.  Apartments suck for blasting music.  Enjoy life people.  Industrialized country problems.  Where people talk about walking miles each day for water in third world countries.  Yes it is cheap to travel to such places, and some feel proud they did, not my thing fuck off.

You're gonna get the most gory disturbing nightmares, human centipede will look cute compared to it, you won't be able to think straight or talk to people, you will have delusions, you will see demons and shadow people, it's like a 24/7 hell.

The most sneaky thing about klonopin is that you won't know you're phisically dependent and how serious it is until you go 4 days without using it, it has a very long half life.

I've been heavily addicted to things in my life before, for years on end, more than once. I understand how difficult it is.
The fact is that when you are ready to give up you just do it, there is no internal fight. An ongoing internal fight on whether or not to do it is just a lack of conviction which no amount of counseling will replace.
If you love it like your mother you aren't really ready. This is why AA and NA have such high recidivism rates. Loads of hoo-ha, moping about, telling stories about how they loved it, mulling about their issues rather than just moving on with life. Their end goal being living life as dry drunks or clean addicts, permanent suffering... fuck that.

Most heavy addicts get to the drug free place by themselves eventually, after all the therapy and support groups turn out to be useless and they realise all they have to do is stop doing drugs mentally as well as physically.

If you don't want it, stop wanting it. A fight against yourself is one you cannot win. If you think of it, think how it actually makes you feel. Drinking alcohol tastes good, then what... alone, insecure, angry, frustrated, ashamed, insert your reality. No need or way to fight that. Just move on.

Be a champ and use some discipline and will power.  Don't cower under the idiotic addiction is a disease and I am powerless over it.  I get that with heroin and oxy's but alcohol?  Really is not that hard to quit for awhile but maybe it is for you.  Whatever, doesn't make you less of a human being.  I almost drowned in a gushing river that was gushing late at night that I stumbled into late at night.

Just go easy on the hard liquor, switch to beer, hydrate and eat everyday healthy food with salt, lots of sea salt and water, is better than Gatorade to rehydrate.  Unasked for advice but one can do it.  It is not like you are shooting up everyday or smoking packs of ciggies.  Addictions suck, take control of it if you choose but don't go into the pity party and poor me type of heavy drinker.
