You can use scare tactics and/or mod the environment so they don't go near

I don't go anywhere without my pepper spray and walking stick. I imagine a good hit of pepper spray and a solid thwack with my walking stick would be a pretty good deterrant for all but the most pissed off animal.
If I were to go on any long distance backpacking I would probably pick up some bear spray.
If the animal is actually hunting me? Eh. Awareness is about my only defence but human beings are woefully inadequate at dealing with being prey. I'd probably just get mauled and eaten without ever seeing it coming.
Not awfully likely but not impossible. If that were the case no sort of self defense other than just not being there in the first place would probably be enough.

Emptying a .22 round into the ground in front of you usually does it.

Currently I carry a flashlight taser thing. Animals hate the sound of that electricity. Scares the shit out of people too.
I want a small light weight hand gun to carry, I know they're unnecessary but I'm happy to carry the weight if it keeps an animal from hurting my wife or I even if the chance is miniscule. For now I'm sticking with the taser. It's also a great option because guns are illegal in the parks

Noisy tasers sounds like a great idea.
I also remembered in Southeast Asia, they put masks on the back of their heads so tigers dont sneak up on them from behind their backs. Might try that too.

Any time you have a confrontation with a wild animal, it is your fault.
If you are not familiar with the wildlife in your area, or how it behaves, then don't go into wilderness areas.

If cougars will be your worst fear then they'll probably be your only fear. Black bears and coyotes and everything else pretty much run away immediately.
A cougar will pounce on you before you know what's happening. If you happen to come face to face with one just be confident in your stance and voice and talk to it, letting it know you're aware of it - again, be firm and loud and confident. Be large.
Don't run, crouch or make any fast movements. Keep eye contact with the cougar and slowly move away to deescalate the situation.
If a cougar get aggressive with you, it's going to try to kill you so you get aggressive back.
But rest assured that cougars attacks are exceedingly rare

What kind of animals are we talking? lions and shit? if a lion wants you he will get you lol
We have black bears and cougars in my area and occasionally wolves. The elk can be kind of dangerous too, they stomp dogs all the time.
Black bears are like giant raccoons, just gotta yell at them, throw a few rocks and 98% of the time they will fuck off. Unless its a mom with cubs then she will stand her ground, in which case you should stay as far away as possible, back away while making loud noises.
Cougars are a little more complicated. If they are young and the mom died or abandon them before they learn how to hunt, they will attack children and pets if they are hungry enough. Its very rare but does happen. 3 young cougars just a attacked a 6 year old girl in my area a few weeks ago. She survived but they had to track down the cougars and kill them, I think they found 2 out of the 3.
Wolves are rarely seen and don't come close to town. Occasionally people hear them howling off in the distance.

I always laugh at them like they pooped their pants or did something really embarrassing. Works for big cats, k9's, and bear. Sharks though are a whole different story, as they do not respond to laughter or embarrassment.
Never trust a bison.

I carry a 9mm side arm mostly to make gunfire noise if i come accross something. Ideally id want atleast a 10mm or .44 mag for real self protection. I carry bear spray in grizzly country and know people who substitute bear spray for wasp spray. They say it works and is cheaper. Your best bet is to make noise. If you are hiking alone, clip a bell onto your shirt so it makes noise. Talk to yourself, call out "hey bear" when hiking though dense Forest and visibility is limited The worse thing is to surprise a wild animal.
Noise is better than any weapon really. Elk hunters get attacked more than any other outdoorsman. Its because they are silent and being stealthy and surprise something. They are always carrying a loaded rifle but rarely able to get a shot off before the attack.
