Just going to chime in and say that the "top layer" or "pseudo-casing" layer of 1/8"-1/4" has made my shoeboxes go from needing regular maintenance (misting) to 100% set-and-forget.

I'm probably going to put together some kind of tek soon on this because I explain it a lot, and I use 100% coir only:

  • I aim to get my coir "just below field capacity." This means that you shouldn't get water coming out of the coir, a drop at most. I usually follow the math in Bod's bucket tek and reduce the water by about 5%, you can always add a litte more later. This will require you to pre-heat your bucket and mix your coir at around 30 min in to ensure you heat it properly.
  • I spawn at 1:2, using 2-3 myco pints (1-1.5qt) and then using the jars to scoop in the coir.
  • I save enough for 1/8"-1/4" top layer out of that coir (so it's part of the 1:2, not extra).
  • I mix as normal, then tamp down the edges a little. I add the top layer last and also tamp that down. 
  • Right before I latch the lids I mist the top layer quite well, it should go a shade darker of brown (not soaked though).
  • Latch the lid and its done until harvest (I open the lid if the shrooms look like they'll push the lid maybe 1-2 days at the end of a flush at most).

This has also removed all my side/bottom pins. This keeps surface conditions almost perfect for cubes in my experience.

That's great, thanks for posting and you should definitely make a tek. I think I actually got a few of the tricks I used (like tamping down the edges) from your posts elsewhere, and they're working well so far. So thanks for that too!
