Alright, little Fuzzy Nuts had 8ml of formula this morning. Then he climbed up on my shoulder and curled up against my neck.  This thing is really playing on my heart strings.

Anyways, the weather will be good all day so I got him in his box outside under  the tree where I found him.  I laid the box on its side with the lid off so momma can get to him.  It’s all plugged up so it’ll be nice and warm and then covered it all with a towel for a bit of shade.

If it’s still in the box at lunch I’ll feed him again.  I will leave him out like this until dark then I’ll bring him back inside if he is still chillin

I've done this before when i was like 10 with my dad we used to let them play in the back yard and they'd always come back inside until they we're ready to leave the nest if you will even still would come back everyday to visit would even bring other squirrels around.

Ok, he is still hanging out.  When I was making his lunch I watched him wander in the yard.  When I got outside he was out of sight.  When I started talking he started making squirrel noises and ran into my hands from under a bush.

He had over 10ml of formula!!

My wife and daughter have started calling him Jim

Also really bad for the squirrels.  Teaching them to associate humans with food is just going to make it way more likely that they get run over, eaten by a pet, shot, or end up eating some sort of food that their bodies just can't process.  Not to mention the fact that it will probably help some diseases spread through the local squirrel population...

Making friends with the loal wildlife seems like a cool idea, but you should really just leave the beasts alone.  A fear of humans goes a long way towards keeping them alive.

Admire it from a distance.  You can live with the local wildlife without throwing a well meaning wrench into their survival skills.

Just got home from work and the squirrel is still here.  Unfortunately momma has not come to claim this little devil.

I will feed him and bring him in a little before dark.  I guess until rain is on the forecast this will suffice.  I got a couple days to get a rain day game plan together.

His tail has bushed out a bunch today.  I feel confident he is on the cusp of fending for himself

Alright!!  Just got off the phone with a wildlife rehabber that’s going to pick him up in about half an hour.  He is going to be with another group of orphans they just took in.  I am so relieved

I am back and Jim turned out to be a Jane.  The rehabber was really impressed.  He said that if ever I wanted to become one myself he would help me get certified with the state.  Although very flattering I don’t think I have what it takes to do this long term

The squirrel will be released in about 3 weeks to an area about 5 miles from here

The guy that picked her up was their bird specialist.  He had day old finches with him but they looked pretty weak.  They have rescued and released 12 bald eagles this year so far
