Congrats, man! Personally, I don't think I'd want to go semi off-the-grid like you did, but I can't deny that part of me is jealous of you. I like being a part of society, though, and I want to feel like I'm making a genuine contribution, and that's not a need that I could fulfill if I took an early retirement.

Well that kinda makes sense.. Land is a valuable commodity. In my short lifetime ive seen unimproved acres go from around 1000-1500 to 5000ish.

Land grows food.
Good land provides water.
I think military types come to the conclusion that these are basic needs so they secur3 them with land..
I dunno if we are srsly that close to any kind of "free fire" thing. But part of me wishes it would all come down.
Survival of the fittest and all that.
All the isms have been there, now you just have dumb people buying into things they barely understand.

I'd love a job that allowed me to have no contact with another human lol. Anytime someone thinks they have authority over me in any way normally doesn't end well.

The more I look at the US system of work and save until you retire, then maybe enjoy life for a few years until you go bankrupt from medical bills, the less I like it. I like the idea of two months vacation per year.

Plus, my current tax bracket means I pay roughly the same in taxes (37% versus ~42% where I want to move). Seems like the only reason to stay in the US is if you own a corporation. Otherwise, you're putting in more work for less results.

I’m surprised only Kyripto has figured this shit out. It doesn’t make much sense but we still do it.

By the time retirement comes, some people survive two more years and then croak... And for what? Were they ever even retired? I don't want to be the guy who wishes he would have done certain things, but didn't.

So here I am with no mortgage on land that taxes at $130/year. Enough money in the bank for emergency and I will probably continue to work twice a week for fun.

The caveat is that I must build my own log cabin on the land, which is something I can do. Farming, hunting, livestock.

It seems like a lot of people work their entire lives for heartless corporations, to get that 100,000 dollar salary so they can retire one day. Is it worth it?

What's your take?

I spend too much money on iced mochas, dirt bikes, and live music to retire. Once you get to about 30 your body starts falling apart and you need a lot of money for medical bills and living. With over-population it is going to keep getting more and more expensive to live as everybody is fighting for the same finite resources.

I do have the ability to work as much or little as I want which is nice. I could retire for a few months at a time and then start back up if I wanted to.

Holy shit, I wouldn't say your body starts falling apart at 30...maybe 40-50?

For sure by 70-80 though. Any ginseng tai chi gluten free shit is going to help you then..

huh?

it depends on what one does for a living/recreation, as well as their genetic makeup and medical/injury history.  i know quite a few people that before they were 30 have had knee/hip/shoulder replacements or back surgeries.

i'm 32 and beginning to feel the effects of the last 14 years of being a laborer and working 60-80 hour weeks many, many weeks.  try carrying/running a 15-20lb chainsaw and moving 60-100+ lb logs all day long.  i guarantee you'll start to feel some shit going wrong in your body.  doing farmwork and splitting dozens of cords of firewood by hand also takes a toll.

Post a pic of dem calves homie.

I'm just trying to be hopeful I guess...never worked hard labor job. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to work on a crab boat...or oil rig...or any physical job.

The pay isn't bad, is it? Would you choose it over sitting behind a computer everyday? Those jobs end up killing you too..

Working a physical job is great. I love it, but it isn't for everybody. I have an electronics engineering degree, but I chose to do electrical contracting because I could never sit behind a desk. If I'm working in the same building for 2 weeks or longer then I start getting bored and antsy and ready to do the next project. I need a lot of excitement at wok or I get bored.

The pay depends on the type of job and your skill level. If I worked 40 hours every week then I could bring home about $250,000 to $300,000 a year. I have 20 years of experience though.

The body doesn't completely fall apart at 30 for most people. That is just when it starts happening slowly. Like when you're hungover or your neck is sore it starts to take longer to heal and get back to normal. Little things like that you start to notice more and more each year after 30.

not trying to sound arrogant, but we are underpaid for what we do.  As a swamper i make $26/hour.  As a sawyer, i have varying rates depending on a variety of factors.  One client is super poor and never grew much weed, lives on social security and a meager retirement, and nearly died from cancer that had spread into her brain...plus she turned 70 this year; i charge her $20/hour.  A few other clients i charge $25.  For clients that are not friends or low-income or elderly/disabled, my rate is $30/hour.

However, as a self-employed person, i am liable for all my taxes.  Further, self-employed tax rates are slightly higher than non-self employed.  So that nice fat pay doesn't go as far as it seems.  Additionally, unless we are doing a job that is on the books, we don't have workman's comp; so if i get hurt, i'm S.O.L.

and yes, i would rather do labor any day of the week over an inside job.  that being said, i had the strangest thought the other day that i have no idea where it originated from.  i thought that being a male stripper might not be the worst job in the world   at least there's exercise involved, right?!  on the flip side, i don't understand how people do construction/demo work.  all the vibrations and intense impact....that shit destroys the bones and joints (shoulders, hips, knees, hands, etc....)

i'll consider posting a pic of my calves; they aren't huge, as i'm 6'3" and ~160lbs, mostly legs.  long, lean muscle as opposed to compact, dense muscle.  they aren't bricks like those guys riding bicycles up and down 8-13% grades.  but generally, we don't walk/hike less than 12 miles per day, sometimes upwards of 15.

If you really post a pic of your calves I'll fall out of my chair laughing.

Getting some land or having some physical labor skills...being self reliant some how is going to be really important. Plenty of jobs are in danger of automation, but lawyers and paperwork related jobs are going to go before physical labor jobs.

I'd really like to buy agriculture land one day but in Hawaii it is tricky.  Much of the Ag.land is owned privately and is not used for farming. It is just held on to until it becomes very valuable$ for residential/commercial purposes. Real shitty.

All the angles...

You need a can of coke or something as a size reference.

I was half expecting a set of "I used to weigh 400lbs" calves. There are plenty of big Hawaiians/Polynesians here that just evolve monster calves.

no more photo-shoots

for size reference, look at the taper down to the ankle.  like i said, i'm 6'3" and fluctuate between 150-160lbs depending on the time of year
