Cat jumped out of car while in drivethrough

Hey psilosopher, you should take the cat thats been in our family for years, I think she'd be happier out at your place. We can totally trust you with her life.

I've been driving her back and forth between the two residences quite a bit lately because I didn't trust her alone at my place yet. I thought she was accustomed to the car because of that, but I'm at a drivethrough last night getting some fast  food that wasn't even good and she jumps out of the window, gets scared by all the other cars around and just bolts. I run out of my car and pursue her but she's just running for it, so I'm forced by drive-through rigmarole to get back in my car and look for her after the fact. Looked around for like 2 hours, she ran in the worst possible part of town, no fucking clue where she was likely to go and I imagine anybody who saw me thought I was up to no good, walking behind a bunch of closed businesses.

I'm just feeling so lousy about it, I'm such a fucking idiot. I'm never unnecessarily eating fast food again. At least she got one super happy night in a warm bed before it happened, she'd been an outdoor cat for most of her life so she was just lovin it.

Might be hard for anyone to catch her. If she jumped out and disappeared she's probably the skiddish type that can't be caught. I've had cats disappear, sucks but cats are still half wild animals that survive fine without human assistance. At least she wasn't a dog, such a dreadful feeling when a dog disappears.

right on. I just double checked and its only 3 miles and she was looking out the window for most of the drive. She's awfully old but fingers crossed. Found a decent picture as well.

I once moved 3 miles down my same road I was living on. Our cat ran away and eventually found our old house and was there with my grandma, who was still living there. Cats have a good sense of direction. They can get back if they want to.

A good rule of thumb to be sure but she's frail and chill. Mostly in the back seat going from window to window checking out the sights

Sending good vibes! I hope you find your furry friend.  I had a ferret that got outside and I was so busted up about it- two days later he crawled in the doggy door and I found him chilling on the living room rug miserable with a hash of ticks but otherwise alright. 

If she’s an outside cat- she at least has the foundation to avoid cars etc and I hope you find her soon.

Once when I was a kid we were taking our cat to the vet and he was on a leash moving from the car into the building and slipped out of the leash. It ran to a post office next door under a mail truck. We chased after it but there was like a hundred mail trucks. We never saw him again. I know this story probably won't make you feel any better, but I hope you find your cat. You didn't mean for this to happen and cats can do OK outside on their own even if you can't find it.

We had this cat when I was a lad that got hit by a car and was presumed dead. We'd see her on rare occasion years later, always looking very hurt as if she'd just been hit by the car, like she was some zombie in purgatory wandering the earth.

I drive around with my cat in the front seat all the time.. Well not all the time but once or twice lol
Its fun watching him be like WTF watching the world as we drive by. Sometimes he gets sick and pukes under the seat tho.

Do you live in a city Psilo? call your local pound and def put posters and shit up.
If she was an outdoor cat she's most likely fine and can figure out how to survive.
Did she have a collar on? Some crazy old cat lady might have taken her in by now.

Damn that sucks man. In my experience, cats hate cars. If i transported a cat, they would be inside a carrier so they cant run away at random.

I did feel dumb for disputing the necessity of pet carriers, because obviously if she was in a carrier I would still have her.

Anyway, it's not really beyond reason that your cat's instinct when she's hungry is to look for people to feed her.  Put up some lost cat posters where she escaped.  For all you know she's already living it up at somebody else's place.  Or just hanging around one of those people who likes to feed stray cats.

The bad thing about taking cats away from their home is it messes with their magnetic navigation they have. So they are confused on where they are instantly. Hopefully kitty gets a bearing on where it is and makes it back to your neighbourhood, but its a looooong shot.

Best to put up posters around and hope someone finds it :shrug:

Now that some time has passed I would like to say something to the OP. Sorry you lost your cat, but you are a very irresponsible cat owner and this is completely your fault. That cat never should have been free in your car, especially with an open window. Please do not get anymore animals. Now the world has more ferrals running free and killing local wildlife and picking up disease. Hopefully it was neutered.

Most pampered cats are fucking miserable indoors full-time. There's a reason they sleep all the time.

I do understand where you are coming from. Cats should not have been attempted to be domesticated.

I kinda agree, like I get people feel bad for the cat which is what is bringing about the aggressive reaction towards op but his intention was not deliberate harm to the cat- not only is it a fuzzy family member lost but you don’t go about beating an ill dog who threw up on the carpet.  Y’all aren’t solving anything rubbing his face in something he cannot change and does not have current control over.  A cat jumping out a window is not the same as intentional animal abuse.

As soon as people have a chance to shit on someone else down and out, they will.  This thread is proof that people suck.  I’m not singling out lophasaurus, by the way.  Even if he was a complete dick to somebody that lost their cat.

As soon as people have a chance to shit on someone else down and out, they will.  This thread is proof that people suck.  I’m not singling out lophasaurus, by the way.  Even if he was a complete dick to somebody that lost their cat.


Sorry, but that was negligent and not really a mistake. If he put the cat in his crate and forgot to latch it shut or dropped the cage and the cat got out then that would be a mistake. This was lazy negligence. The OP clearly didn't take the steps to protect his animal and this is borderline animal abuse. What if it was a dog that got out and got hit, what if he wasn't watching his kid and his kid ran in the road and got hit by a car.

Telling him that he did the wrong thing does help because he might think twice about it in the future and the people reading this thread might think twice about their animals protection in the future. I know it doesn't help his ego, but I'm not here to make OP feel good, you guys can do that.

I'm a complete dick, but not OP? We should all be nice and praise the OP because he made a "mistake?"

To the people in the thread berating him.

It's as if anyone who has ever had a dog get out and get lost, or their cat gets hit by a car, or a strong breeze touches their rabbit, they should never be allowed to even look at an animal again.

It's a bad thing that the cat got lost. OP isn't necessarily a bad person because the cat got lost.

I'd say someone who berates another as if they're worth nothing over a accident shouldn't be allowed around other people more than this guy shouldn't be allowed around cats.

I agree with lophosaurus- OP isn’t a good pet owner, and not just even about this cat stuff.  In another thread, he posted about having been fined by his municipality for being a negligent chicken owner, and then bragged about how he’s now harassing and vandalizing the property of the people who reported his negligence.  He’s even harassing their dogs.  OP is not the kind of person who should be around animals, or owning them.  Frankly, I’m thrilled for the cat- it saw its chance and took it.  It’s probably living a better life now.

ya my dogs get free reign of the car, I dont trust themm around windows though unless they are wearing a harness I can hold

Only one wanted out all of the time

We would take her outside

One time she got out , she took off running and climbed up a tree 

She was siamese  , miss that cat , had a good life

She used to love the steam from the shower
