We just had the coldest weather of the year with heavy rainfall throughout the northern hills. It's getting late into the season and time is running out so if you want to look I would get out there asap. I was still finding pins in the north as recently as a couple of weeks ago and that was after an extended warm and dry period but they were few and far between.

If I were able to hunt tomorrow I'd be confident of not coming home empty handed but there's no guarantees at this time of year.

No offence taken haha, I was pretty well hidden from the road and stuff and I'd never encountered police whilst picking before so I wasn't really looking out. I was quite surprised to say the least, maybe more like 10 metres away but it felt close when I heard something and turned around. Will definitely be more aware of surroundings in the future lol.

Anyone having luck finding subs within or around the pines? What microclimate do you look for?

Whilst amongst the pines, look for small areas of fresh snow, then find pins amongst the melting glaciers.

I have made a few walks around forests south of myponga and come up short the last few weeks. I have found a lot of other types of inedible but pretty to look at fungus, seen a lot of nice views and even a few deer so not totally wasted efforts. would be good to find a few though also :laugh:

honestly most of my luck has been in natural areas around like gums and eucalyptus trees and stuff, lots of fallen debris around. Look for ferns in these areas or around wood littered areas with longish grass and around creeks. most of my finds have been around natural areas within scattered ferns. also good finds just next to the road if youre goin for a drive and see a bunch of ferns.
when i go to pines i also look for ferns on the edges and throughout the plantation and any places the sun reaches, im no pro but theres a fair few posts about it if you look back, i know bob did one maybe a year or 2 back if you can find it, i just read alot before hunting haha.

well I have been reading a lot on here and armed with some new information I am heading back out tomorrow morning to a new spot near to where I was looking. It has a water source, older looking pines and some open bushland. I will be keeping an eye out for that bracken fern, Wish me luck folks, cheers :smile:

I didn't get out over the last weekend unfortunately mollytrolley, the day we planned to go it rained a lot and I got busy with other things. I am hoping the rain we did get, the cold weather and dewy mornings might mean we are not to late. So I have locked in a hike tomorrow morning and I am prepared for any weather :laugh:

Hey guys, this is my first post here. I have been hunting for 2 years now, this year been my second. I have only ever found 3 very little fungi bois recently this year. Yet unfortunately this spot was given to me by someone a very long time ago and now is heavily picked and well known. I also suspect that it has been over picked and none have grown there since. I have been hiking so many time this year for hours and hours, from suburb to suburb.i had gone down south for the first time, camped out there in my car with the missus and then on the way to kuipo in the morning, skidded out on a gravel road and crashed the car.... It has been a hectic year and a very unlucky one in terms of fungi luck, I have found some prestine optimum areas, yet nothing. I have settled with the universe is saying it's not time yet, orrr... everywhere I go has already been picked orrr... I just suck aha. If anybody can provide any tips or anything at all, please feel free to DM me or reply on here. I know a lot when it comes to hunting and identifying  but I'm obviously doing something wrong. Happy hunting :smile:)))

I hiked in the central hills today and found about thirty. There was some pinning, however not a great deal. The freshest subs I found where located in a microclimate of long grass in a sheltered creek bank. Some of the others had been out a little long with some blackening, which I am gathering may be from frost and heavy rains.

Wow that's so lucky, I mainly hike up north and central hills. The areas were so perfect that I went to yesterday that I couldn't understand why there wasn't anything. But oh well... my time will come eventually, maybe not this year, but eventually...

I saw some fresh ones and left a few pins alone. Some were a little dry and haggard but still a few around. I can't work out how to upload a pic lol
