bacterial contam question
    #25932755 - 04/13/19 04:15 PM (5 years, 9 months ago)

hey yall

i knocked up some grain bags 1 month ago and I seen only a couple spots of visible mycelium, which i thought was really odd because 2 weeks is usually the amount of time it takes to be fully colonized in my experience.

anyway, I took a sniff from the micro-filter and it was a sweetish smell, definately not earthy or mushroomy so i knew something was up.

instead of throwing it out, I shook the bag up and crossed my fingers to see what happens.

turns out, the bags are like half colonized with healthy looking mycelium, but that smell is kinda still there, not as much as it was before, but nonethe less still there.

my question is, if it fully colonizes, should i give it a shot and throw it into bulk ( horse manure)

any input would be great, thank you

Pics would help but sometimes you will get a sweet smell because of the grain usually it's when the myc is broken up after full colonization .. if you went through all my jars and tried to smell through the filter you would assume something's up cause you can never smell mushrooms atleast I cant..

rinse and fruit.  I find with bacterial contamination in brf, if I can't slice off the bad, fruiting whole appears to keep myc healthier, longer.

Yeah, I mean it was just extremely slow to colonize, then it was that sweet smell, which I never smelled on my previous bags.

Here are pics of the 2 bags.

I'm guessing you nocced up with spores right ? Spores can take forever to germ.. but they look healthy to me for the most part .. you have to remember that grain has a sweet smell .. so dont stress if you shake something fully colonized and its super sweet then yoo u have funky spawn

Sounds legit bro, I'll just wait till they are fully colonized, break em up and give them a sniff test 1 more time.

Thank you
