Been using the hobby felt type material for a few grows now and wondering if I should keep with it or just by the good stuff for around $1-1.25 a PC. Right now I'm cutting my felt from large sheets that run about a dollar and give me like 12-15 discs for my wide mouths. Should I pony up and buy the real deal ??

Both felt and SFDs hold up excellently. They will probably get a bit stained up over time but the SFD material is great shit that lasts pretty much forever. Felt should have about the same durability but I didn't keep those around long enough to know for sure. Matter of fact I think they are both made of the same material (anyone correct me if I'm wrong) but SFD is specifically engineered for this application so alot of folks prefer it.

I paid $20 for 12 90mm discs (they sent 15), and I have cut most into 8 (quarter size except the center can be bigger), meaning I have enough for 120 jars. I only have 60 jars right now (3 months into this hobby). I have siliconed them, and removed them and put them on other lids and they hold up perfectly so far and clean up easily for reapplying on new lids. Only thing I'd warn against is the hype that they are waterproof (what I read on this forum at least). That's bullshit in my experience. They are not, and will soak through if they are in the wrong spot in your PC. I had a few jars that I didn't even inoc contam fresh out of the PC because the middle jar sits directly below the pressure gauge which drops water straight down into my filters, and sometimes when removing the PC lid, I get sloppy and water drips down onto jars. I didn't even noc them up. Sure enough after 2 hours at 18psi they still contaminated without ever even opening them up. I have never tested felt, so I can't compare, but wanted to share my experience if it helps.

Are you not covering them with foil?

For a couple batches on the PC I didn't, because I read that they were waterproof and that you don't have to cover them with foil. After I got contams, I filled some jars up with water and turned them upside down and confirmed that they are far from waterproof.
It was probably from some old post from 10+ years ago because while I define my searches to only include posts from the last 3-5 years, I often click on similar threads down below which does not discriminate, leading me down paths of weggery.
