He didn't die because the bullet went out through his cheek. I think it would have done way more damage than they showed. His mouth would have been burned to hell with teeth broken.
I loved the movie, one of the best I have seen in a long time . I really don't know what he meant by "my eyes are wide open" Its been a while since i saw it. I don't remember what Brad Pitts character was saying . I just know it made sense at the time.

I've seen this movie many times, and still don't fully understand all of it.
Tyler said, "what's that smell?"
Right after he shot himself. I don't get that part...
Yeah, he said "my eyes are open." Which means he's finally "hit bottom" and has given up. He doesn't need Tyler anymore because he understands that he IS Tyler. At least that's what I think...
But then Tyler dies, you see a hole through the back of his head, and Jack has a hole in his cheek. Uh, okay. I have no idea why Tyler said "what's that smell"

THAT LINE basically was a way for ed norton's character to convey to the audience and himself that he truly believed that brad pitt was someone beside himself. everything he was seeing was reality, it had to be, hes seeing it with his own eyes.

GOD! now when I see the movie I am going to rember that, even though all I saw was:

I did not understand, in one of the last lines when he shot himself, right before he shot himslef he said:
"My eyes are open."
BOOM!
