BTW - is there a Code Phrase if I bump into any of you rascals? LOL.
Cos I have no idea what I am doing I'll be easy to spot.
If you find a rando singing 'Gilligans Island' while hunting, that'll be me and my mate :-)

Catchy tune I gotta say.
If you look in wet shady areas you might find some staticc. Temps have been down low enough for them to fruit. So you just need to look down gullies in places where it feels cooler. Good luck.

To be honest they would still be around (not in abundance), you'd just need to look for the correct hill sides and micro-climates. If you do end up looking; 100% needs to be a constantly shaded area and the ground has to be damp, but it has been hot the last couple of days. If its a big drive for you as it is for me, wouldn't bother.
Edit: didn't see there was another page, you got the right advice. If I see anyone i'll be avoiding you especially if you're singing

Hello everyone,
Newbie to this site too and first time hunter of shrooms. Located in Newcastle NSW and been on 3 or 4 trips now from the watagans to Morrisset and everywhere in between. State forests, pine plantations, woodchipped parks etc... for zero on the active mushroom side of things. A question for the experts; is it too early at this stage for the psilocybe subs at this time of year? Minimum temps are still in the 15-20C range, but on the other hand there has been a lot of rain in the area. Found heaps of mushrooms in all the places I have searched, just not the ones I am after.
Cheers and happy hunting

Wednesday last week was a good early haul due to the two cyclones bringing up that rain n cold fronts.
Few more weeks now till the true fun begins.

Hey Azza, you have an Amanita in there. Was that part of your haul? I heard they can make you sick unless you cook them first. I've never tried em tho.

Probably need to search at higher elevations. You'd be lucky to find subs in the lowlands yet.
Look on clay soil. Avoid sandstone country. Unless you can get down to creeks where the shale and clay are. Easy to tell. Look at the banks of the creek.I think you'd be better off waiting until last week in April onwards to find subs at low elevations along creeks.
Woodchip beds even later at low altitudes. I've never hunted mushrooms in the Watagans. Driven through there. I could never find subs in the bush north of Wisemans ferry. There was too much sandstone around. Yet along the river theyd be there growing in the floodzone.
Around Newcastle same would apply. Wait a few weeks then check creeks. Looking on wood and sticks where the level has risen and receded.
Great find Azza. Looking good.

Some people don't have a problem eating them raw and some do, it's highly recommended that you thoroughly cook all mushrooms, even store bought. Amanita Muscaria can be done in a few ways, you can bake it at low temperatures to change the nasties in active compounds or you can parboil in two changes of water to remove the nasties and the actives to have a nice edible.

Went for my first hunt since I moved to the east coast, but I think I waited a bit too long after our recent big rains. I must have missed the main flush by a few days. Not to worry, there's more rains coming!

Actually goldtops handle cold weather better than meanies in north nsw.
In winter need to find hotspots for Pan.cyans. Like sun all day with a hill facing north. If its facing a river even better.
P.cubensis in winter more in areas that are frost protected. I've seen a lot more healthy looking goldtops in winter than meanies.
Did you ever go past 20g fresh with meanies? 2g dry would not be the same unfortunately with meanies. I was having a discussion about goldtop potency. Concensus was they dont dry that well and retain full potency.
Subs on the other hand retain potency well.
Thanks for your kind words about me on the NZ forum. I couldn't have got far with an ID for P.tasmaniana, alutacea, papuana and sect.Zapotecorum without Inski's and Alan Rockefeller's help.
Alan Rockefeller has DNA sequenced all four species in answer to Ent's querry about P.alutacea DNA sequencing in Vic 2019 season thread.
There are a lot of similarities between P.semilanceata, alutacea and tasmaniana on a macroscopic level.

Oh really, I found that pan cyans did better when next to a creek due to consistent humidity. So they could fruit when there was no rain.
But the cube field always had its grass cut often, So it was exposed to wind easier.
But all that IME was the Mid-North Coast area.
Nah I never had a massive pan cyan haul in one go.
Heyo;" I was having a discussion about goldtop potency. Concensus was they dont dry that well and retain full potency."
Agreed but I've found the Gold tops themselves can / seem to vary in potency weight for weight depending on how quick / slow they grow. Used to think it was the drying, But found it best to heat them over 40-50c for a while to kill off the bug lavae so they eat less. Then 35c till dry.
Still Subz lose some... would you agree half their potancy 9-12 months..?
oh and how much P.alutacea wet or dry would i need to match 1g sydney sub

Heyowana,
Cheers for the reply to my post mate, much appreciated and I will take all advice onboard for my next hunt. Will concentrate next hunt on creeks and gulley areas west of where I live. Another question I have is ‘do actives along creeks/ rivers only exist in the fresh water reaches, or can they handle the salt? Being a newbie to shroom hunting, thanks to all you guys for your contributions on this forum. The information and advice on here is in valuable to people like me just starting out, so cheers. Can not wait for that first wild find and the trip that follows.
Happy Hunting

shags,
Im also from Newcastle area, ive done a few hunts around williamtown area and karuah however unsuccessful. Ive been told by a few people that cubes grow out tea gardens way aswell as winter species, there is a lot of pine out that way so i would assume they are talking about subs. hope this helps

I think 1g dried Sydney sub needs another species to weigh in. Perhaps my tolerance is a bit high. P.alutacea didn't have the staying power to compare to Sydney or mountain subs. Just when I'd feel disoriented and out of it they'd wear off.
I don't like them. They did feel a bit more fiery and meaner in effect than P.tasmaniana. At the hour mark after feeling out of it they'd wear off.
I cant remember how many I'd take. Maybe weight for weight they are okay. They weigh hardly anything. I gave up on them as a drug species but think they are very photogenic.

I've never looked along saltwater creeks or rivers for subs. Consider the phrase sand and subs don't mix. Check out the top ends of freshwater creeks. The water tends to sit around there for a while before running off. Often there is debris from sticks and leaves sitting around. So its a good place to look.
As you walk down the creek check around ferns close to the creek course. Any piles of sticks water has ran over from runoff into the creek. Piles of sticks in the creek course too as you walk down can be good producers for subs.
Lantana near the creek can be good. They seem to like fruiting on decayed wood and leaves from lantana on clayey soil. I don't know how prevalent wandering jew is around Newcastle. In Sydney it can be a goldmine for sub production.
It acts like a net catching sticks washed down the creek. Also it stays wet around the roots after rain. On clayey soil definately a good place to look. Just don't take fido with you. Dogs can have severe skin allergies to wandering jew.
Hope you find some and find out how magic they can be.

I've had some surprises from eating Sydney subs over the six month mark. Just how good they were even when stored poorly. I never used to weigh my doses with them though.
Probably ate too many at a time by today's conservative standards. I do remember eating from 20-50 dried at a time. Fifty and wow. Even good auditory hallucinations to go with all those colours. Twenty wasn't bad either.
I do remember eating 18 dried ones over 6 months old. Big surprise how much bodyload they gave me later on. I used to like bodyload to the point that the right dosage had me unable to walk at the end of the trip.
These days I'm over it. Prefering species like papuana that don't have it. Having said that I'll give the mountain subs here a good go this year. Just need them to show. Nights are still a bit warm yet.
